Been a while. Figured I'd update this thread with some new pictures. Dash, grill, lights, carpet, boot, etc.

AEG163 cylinder head back from machine shop.

New parts...

Machinist had a tough time figuring out how to align the tiny hole in the brass bushings.

Yadda yadaa...

Had the original cam ground - can't remember the specs - Isky Torquer spec I believe.

Crank is not Cooper S - dang it. Oh well, it's machined and ready.

That's all for now. Hopefully it won't take me two years to update photos again.

I'm in the Seattle area. I was born in 1966, so that also plays a part in my passion for the car. Even though there was plenty wrong with the car, all of the important aspects were good - matching engine number, correct dates on electrical components, SU fuel pump vent under the rear seat, etc. - all of the Cooper S Aussie details were correct.

Good thing i told him it was going to be a driver.....

You are too kind, thank you!

I used to work in a body shop as well where we primarily did show cars. This was in the mid 80s and paint jobs in that shop were around $20k-$40k and perfect. There's nothing like looking down on a hood and seeing clouds in the sky, trees, etc. - so much depth. I guess I wanted something similar. Those cars were done in lacquer and quite fragile. They were hauled around in filtered trailers. HA!

I plan on driving mine a lot, but you never know, I could get fearful once it's finished.

This paint has been a struggle - it sure seemed worse than black for flaws jumping out.

As for straightness, that's where Gunnar is a magician with metal work. Many of the panels we purchased were returned or thrown out - they were just junk. The lower door steps were made by hand. The outer sills on the Australian Minis only had one vent, so removing the vents from newer outer sills was difficult requiring flattening and shrinking. Many more stories on the metal work...

We've kept all of the metal work true to original, including spot welds with one exception. I had Gunnar add seat belt brackets in the back. I heard this was an option, but back then they probably just drilled holes in the tin, bolted them on, and called it good. We used Australian engineered brackets and mounted them in high strength locations.

I have 938 pictures here if anyone wants to browse: //mmalleck.smugmug.com/Cars/1966-Morris-Mini-Cooper-S/12970678_w27vhL#1635586205_FcvV84w

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!

I will ask the person I purchased the car from. He purchased two - a Mk2 Tamarisk Green and this 66 in New BRG. I would like to get a little more history. I did get some history from Australia, but only for one state.

UPDATE - I heard back from the person I purchased my car from. He confirmed his name was Peter Tucker. The cars were in way worse shape than claimed. Probably good you passed on the deal. (rust free = the rust is free, no additional charge)

Beautiful car, It's amazing the amount of work and money we put into these cars that were made as cheaply as possible and as quickly as possible. A car that was sold as very basic transportation is now cherished and pampered to museum quality! Let me know if you need your heater re-done.

Shocker, you have done a fantastic job!  It is nice to see such quality of work and effort to get things absolutely perfect on a Mini.  You will be rewarded with many years of smiles every time you take it out for a spin.  Can't wait to see it finished and hopefully in person sometime.

Outstanding, got to love this level of work. The best part is no mentiom of Honda or other odd ball power. We are looking forward to a new shell build starting in the spring, March delivery expected. It will be my second new shell build in the last ten years. Can't say I'll miss the piles of rust getting sweep up each day. My hats off to you.

Sorry for the slow updates. Been extremely busy with work and Gunnar has been busy finishing the paint.
We wheeled the Mini outside for the real test. On the first 3 coats of clear, there was a fair amount of peel that I didn't like. After sanding the clear coat flat again and a respray, I'm very happy with the results.
I'll start the pictures with a self portrait of me  - or at least my reflection in the driver's side of the car.

Thanks! The paint color is connaught green, offered in Australia in 1970, and is quite a bit darker than almond green. I like almond green, it has kind of a creamy look to it. Connaught green is actually the same as used on the new MINI Cooper John Cooper Works World Championship 50.

Great work!!! One of the difficult things to do is the oil cooler ledge and you guys seems to have done it right. Too often people just cut and bend.
