I just saw this thread and realized I hadn't provided any closure on my post from 2011.

It turns out the problem with the A/C pulling down the engine was engine related. The head was shot (the car smoked badly) and the head gasket itself blew out, shortly after that 2011 post.

With a freshly reconditioned head and new head gasket, the 1275 pulls like a train. I can hear the A/C compressor kick in, but can't feel it anymore. The A/C is still almost useless in the Ohio Valley humidity, but it doesn't affect the performance of the engine anymore.

I have a Japanese 83 Mini automatic with A/C.  I have two reason for wanting to remove it.  1:  I live in the Pacific Northwest, actually NW of Seattle, Port Angeles and we just don't need A/C.  2:  I don't like the new dashes and want to revert to the older style center bezel.  I don't have any immediate plans on removing the unit, but if someone is dieing to have it I could move up my time frame.  I'll be looking for $600.00 which includes Fedex shipping in the lower 48.  That includes everything including the dash.

Thanks

If my memory is correct, those two brackets are to hold the A/C rad to the front of the car on the RH side.. one goes to the inner wheel well, and the other to the slam panel..it's been a while since I removed them..

Kymummer the compressor should not make noise or slow the car down significantly, check the pressures on both sides maybe the bearings also. Check behind the dash for cold air leaking on the joints.

The blower control switch should go to max and it is not going to cool down fully on anything but in 95 deg plus weather. I have run several Mini's with a/c and they work excellent as long as the system is in good running condition and i have to adjust them down as it is too cold this is in Florida where it is hot and humid for many months.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Kymummer.....sounds like the AC Ceramic Block is on it's way out. You can buy them on Japan Yahoo.....which is their version of Ebay.

If anyone has the bracket that mounts the compressor to the engine, I would be interested in buying.

I know you aren't thinking about resale...but I would think it would be easier to resell with the AC.

Interesting ... my Mini is a Jap spec with the A/C, and I jumped up and bought it BECAUSE of the A/C.  It's awfully hot and humid in KY in the summer (especially this year).  BUT, I really wish I had known more.   The A/C makes strange noises (the compressor kicking on and off, I think) which are very distracting to someone who focuses on the sound of the engine, as I do.  The A/C does indeed task the 1275 engine, I can feel it kicking in and out as I'm driving down the road. It clutters up the area under the hood ridiculously.

And the A/C is totally inadequate, it has no chance against the current hot weather.   I've had it tested by a reputable auto a/c shop who told me it had no leaks, was fully charged and seemed to be doing what it was designed for.  They admitted zero experience, as expected, with Mini A/C.

I do have one question for people with similar setups, though ... The A/C cuts off when I set the blower to full, it only works if the blower is somewhere around 80% or lower.  The auto a/c shop sort of shrugged when I pointed that out and couldn't tell me if that was normal.  They felt it was designed that way to prevent freezing.  Has anyone else seen this?

All in all, I'd like to remove the A/C, but will probably keep it for the resell value.  Maybe I'll find another sucker like me.   lol

Hello everyone, I purchased a 1994 RHD Mini Cooper SPI (Jap spec) with an air conditioning. I also would like to remove the air conditioning and I'm interested in selling the whole kit including the dash. That would be a reasonable price to ask for the AC unit, dash and as a kit? ofc if disassembly is done without hurting any of the parts.

Thanks!

If anyone is interested in a air con system already removed.. let me know and I can talk to the last owner I pulled it off, as it's still sitting in my garage.. Mike

I appreciate all the advice... I guess my second reason to remove was to allow for more room to work with under the hood.
