The entire thread is dealing with a Mini, not a MINI, which you have. I would suggest you start a new tread rather than tag on to this one.

Hi, I just signed up to the forum since I'm new with the Mini cooper.
I recently purchased a 2008 Mini Cooper Clubman 6 speed manual, not turbo, and at first started grinding when going into second gear, some times would work fine other times would grind or pop out.
I replaced the oil twice with redline 75w80 and 2nd gear no longer stays in, it would grind if I try to hold it and pop out.
What is weird is that I can downshift to the second gear without any issues, but as soon as I try to give it gas pops out.
All the rest of the gears work fine, car has 120k miles, any one familiar with this issue?
Thanks

No dust-up here (per the established standards of this board). Just a friendly, intense discussion between knowledgeable, passionate car guys as far as I can see. The only thing missing is the aroma of freshly drawn (not poured) beer and the sounds of a dart game in the background.

"Where did they all go?" asks Big Al. Most are still lurking and polling up occasionally, including the three amigos he mentioned.

All the acrimony on this message bored would disappear with the simple ability to place rolleyes where needed.....

Okay, not really. But I'll keep lobbying for my favorite cause.

Dust ups, fights, slander & out right death threats- (LOL)

We have had them all, especially when Billy Bob (BC) was running rough shod over the forum-

His fights with Peter Mustand and Quicksilver were legendary but no one got hurt-

You start thinking back and as coopertune said, where did they all go ?

Still a great source and place to visit-

Hi Mini4fun! Cooper Tune is very likely correct in his assessment of your slipping out of reverse. At some point the bushing inside the reverse gear was made as two pieces installed from either end, along with the reverse shaft being drilled to supply oil in the middle. Many of these do come apart, and that bushing likely supplied the "copper" in your oil.

Minimans, I know you are knew and I'm impressed with your knowledge and your courtesy with your early posts. The "arguments" seem to be a natural result of the passion people have over these cars.. get two guys in a bar talking Chevy vs. Ford, and as the tab grows, a fight is likely to break out!! I ALWAYS try to be clear about having a sense of humor, reminding readers that this is largely OPINION! When I use my own car as an example, I'm very up-front about admitting my set-up is NOT terribly practical, I am NOT one of those that thinks you're an idiot if you don't see it my way! This topic has been going on most of this year. Cooper Tune and I are great friends now (maybe!).... over the years he has had reason to miss-trust us, but I'm working to change all that! It is my hope that even arguments are informative and entertaining for readers!

I'm sorry did I miss something? There wasn't even a dust up here. Ignore the cool breeze it will go away. I have recently joined two other forums to see what's out there. That makes 5 all together, to many to visit each day. If you want to find out how a forum works post four times. Offer something rare and expensive for sale. Request help finding something rare and expensive. Ask for info / help with something that takes more than a day. Answer a simple question only if you are sure you are correct and have done it. Reading while important is not doing in this case. See what names end up on which list. If you are new here you can't imagine what we have been though to get here. I wonder if anyone is pervert enough to admit he saved the Ms Oz photo series. I bet Mr Oz did. Al still have the full body ink Beccabing sent us? And Dodge where the heck is Dodge? Steve (CTR)

As a new boy here what suck's is the arguments! All sound very knowlegable to me? you take the advise as it comes and apply it to your problem don't see the need for back biting and cat fight's? I get enough of that from work don't need it on a forum.............................................

Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

Steve we are all fortunate to have the MM forum - the best in the country - given to us for free.

It hugely benefits 3rd party shops as an additional sales channel and a resource for tough questions like this. And MM is not getting repaid for that.  If I was back East I would have used you as my shop because this forum pointed me to you.  A very big service to us both.

Jemal and Tony just built my power unit that pulls like a train every day as my DD.  My KAD works great because Jemal's new 6562 tranny does.

I'm in the middle of building two trannys now. I also have a pair already built waiting to be installed. That of course has nothing to do with your question. I suspect you can select reverse and perhaps hold your hand on the shifter and back up. When you lift off throttle the lever slips out of gear if you don't hold it tight. There are two bushings in the reverse gear. One has moved  allowing the gear to tilt under load. Being SC gears they will bind in place under load remove the load and the tilt allows it to pop out of gear. Being that late a tranny it's a DAM5626 and I have run into the mid 90s on ones with tranny issues.  I have plenty cores and a good selection of finial drive ratios. I can rebuild one of mine and exchange with you if you like or do yours. I can do the R&R the power unit also if you need or want that. What part of Va. it's a long state in one direction. Steve (CTR)

PS If like the others I have run into the problem lies at the very bottom of the tranny everything has to come out.

Hi, I have a 95 mini that pops out of reverse, and also found part of copper spacer in oil, any ideas? I also live in VA.

And isn't it about keeping it interesting and entertaining for ALL!!

What's with you Steve?  It's the way you ask your questions... as though another informed opinion is "misleading" people. Perhaps you've only seen one because you are not Mini Mania!  I happen to have probably TWO DOZEN of your "so called" Wide Ratio (oh wait, better use your official made-up name...A++ ratio) gear boxes in my core inventory, all with 3.1 or 2.95 FD.

No one has to begin "pissing" over this stuff! Just relax and consider that we all share an interest and sometimes passion for these little cars. Those of us that are more knowledgeable (usually) enjoy sharing our experience to help newbies or people with just a passing interest. There is no need to badger one another over our choices or our taste in how we set up our cars, nor is there a need for a contest to see who is "more right".

I have talked to quite a few people on here. I hope those people see that I have no axe to grind, no view to promote, no agenda to further. I help people figure out what they have and what could be wrong with it. Often, it then goes to people like you to resurrect it to be enjoyed once again. Sounds like a win-win!

I am however half Welsh. I will in a good natured way, take your words and possibly with a little sarcasm and humor, point out any inconsistencies or variations from facts that might be present! You are welcome to do the same within the rules of polite discourse.  That's part of the entertainment value for others! Give me a call sometime. You'll see we're on the same side!

Thanks all I did was ask two simple questions and I got a load of ego. If you are post for the general public please don't mislead them. I have only seen one in 45 years of messing with them. Steve (CTR)

I've seen one double groove 'box in 15 years of playing with them, and would suggest that the majority of '90s gearboxes are normal single groove A+ ratios not the wide ratio ones fitted primarily to the HLE Metro.

Making it up as I go along? Really Steve? I've personally built dozens of gearboxes using all the possible combinations of cases, shift styles, gear ratios, and final drives. How about an 1128 box with a magic wand, your A++ wide ratio and JK 2.9 FD? The Pick-up launches nicely with a first gear ratio right near what a 3.44 FD would give, does 80+ MPH with ease and gets close to 40 MPG with a 1380... BUT it does NOT shift anywhere near as quick as my Close Ratio short shift rod change with 3.76 final.

What does that have to do with late rod 2nd gears? Here's the "no mystery" part... the "real" close ratio of the 60s S, and 1275GT of the 70s had an 18 tooth input with a correspondingly smaller OD gear on the layshaft, but with the same tooth count as the standard set. That one extra tooth is THE ONLY difference in the whole box, but it makes 1st gear taller and tightens up all the ratios on the way to 1 : 1 fourth.  The late wide ratio set uses a 16 tooth input along with different 2nd and 3rd gears, so a much lower 1st gear and bigger RPM drops between gears on the way to 1 : 1 fourth. Those bigger RPM drops mean the baulk rings have a much harder life having to spin the gears up to shaft speed on every shift. 2nd has the biggest "gap" between gears so takes the worst beating.  Even on the standard ratio (17 tooth input), 2nd takes the most abuse, and the bulk of those have been around for several decades by now.

I know you've been on this board for ever... Speaking for myself, I put info on here for anyone who may read it. A public forum like this can make it easy to forget that it's not just us talking. I explain things for other readers who don't have NEARLY your level of knowledge or experience. If I put things in simple terms, it's not meant to insult you or other experts. Vast numbers of people don't know a "rod change" from an oil change!!!!
