The K probably denotes the emissions and 5 mph bumpers. Common Canadian market VIN from 1979.

It looks to be a special edition mini in the 1974-1980 age range, they were not building coopers at that time however only the 1275gt.Given the vin states a 998 engine I would bet it's a Mini 1000.

What sort of sense are you trying to get from the number. It looks like a 1979 mini 1000 VIN to me.
It is not a Cooper.
