that, I don't know. A friend of mine told me that that 'empy' space is to add more terminals (or whatever word that is called). In a Mini, each light (reverse, stop, turn...) has a different terminal, while on a more modern car, the same cluster of lights works as stop, reverse and turn.
I am sure that a more technical explanation can be give from the experts here, but that is how I udnerstood it. I hope it helps,
Abel

Just curious...
Does that mean that the unit can be flipped around and used on either side of the car?

Mystery solved. After a few tries, a friend of mine figured out that I was placing the metal rod in the wrong way. See picture for clarification. I hope this helps others in the future from scratching their heads with something (apparently) so simple.
thanks to those who offered their help,
cheers,
Abel

that's interesting because I can sometimes make the left signal work (by jiggling the stalk), but not the right one, which seems to be the one damaged.

this is what the old indicator stalk looked like. It is a tricky thing. The moment you remove the metal cover, all sorts of springs a little pieces began to come out of it. I had to hold the return mechanism (top and bottom) with one finger to keep everything in place. I didn't see anything similar on the old one, though.

Take the old switch apart with more care and you should be able to see where the little contact rod goes. If you look at your new switch long enough it should make sense. it fits into a slot and is pressed against the contacts by a spring.
You can move the outer column slightly to adjust things to get the steering wheel and cancelling mechanism in tune with one another, though I don't know if that would suffice in this case.

I just bought a brand new indicator stalk and was about to install it when I noticed that the 'plastic piece' that fits into the steering wheel (and makes the turn signal stalk go back to its neutral position) was shorter than the original, so I decided to replace it. That was a wrong move, since the moment to opened the new stalk something fell off and now I have no idea where it goes. It is some small rod. Can anybody help me identify this piece and put it back where it belongs?
thanks
Abel

I am looking to replace the column switch //minimania.com/part/21A2658/Turn-Signal-Switch-Late--Mk4-Right-Side-Location on my 1978 BL and wanted to ask if anybody has a functional one for a decent price. The layout of the MM part looks a bit different to what I have on mine, but I guess it will fit.
cheers,
Abel
