like you, mine is a 1275 HIF44 and came with a BDL needle. Too lean

This website somewhere listed a common mod as a BCE needle. Richer. Helped

Like Bikewiz stated.... I am not an expert on this carb either, I'm also running a HIF44. But I did read somehwere, if running one of these and you have a high compression engine, you may need a BFY needle. My engine compression tested last year at 195ish across all four. I bought the car last year, it does have a BFY and I run ATF in the dashpot. Not sure if it's right, but mine runs very well.

It could be the dashpot damper. I changed mine from the LZX 1505 to LZX 2085 (it's molded into the black plastic screw top) That change was suggested over on theminiforum for similar symptons. I'm running a similar spec, it fixed the stumble/lean feeling between upshifts. I've asked over there why it works but haven't gotten an answer (just posted a little while ago), maybe someone here can shead some light on why. I also think I'm going to change the BDL for a BBC until the weather warms up, temperatures around 40-50F my car runs a little lean, again another suggestion was that needle to richen it up.

And to qualify this I'm mechanically inclined but clueless when it comes to tuning this HIF6/44 most of the suggestions I've read here and elsewhere have worked to some degree or another.

How about the float on the carb and the small needle valve. There is a small strainer in there also. Have checked/replaced the fuel filter?

I'm exhausted with little resolved... I've had this mini since December and just never spent the time to sort it. It's 1275 a+ rc 40 single box. Single hif 44 and lucas electronic distrib.  car always seemed sluggish to 3k then took off like a turbo. Still peaks at 5500. Don't know The cam. Assuming its a metro. Anyway put a light on it today and it was off the scale. So set it around 10 btdc and retuned the carb. now the car launches fine in first. Revs out then its flat in second. Almost like there's no fuel there. Made new wires. Cleaned the plugs. Cleaned the rotor and cap and removed the dash pot to check the needle which is a bdl. Also made sure that the retainer was level with the dash pot bottom. Car just has no low end after 1st. Any thoughts? It's definitely running smoother and seems to have better low end power off the line. But once revved out and shift into second it takes a few seconds for the power to come back on.
