Well this thread has got me back into thinking Vtec again, considering I daily drive and the wife wants me to get something reliable.  Oh yeah, and Jemal too.

We all tease Carnauba Carl (Mania Calendar Car) but his car sounds like the trumpets of Valhalla itself pulling away at light speed.

Interesting route to gaining horses over going with a B series.

Should be lighter and have a very nice kick if the turbo is spooled up when the VTEC kicks in!

Also I would assume you will need that extra space you gained with the flip front now?

7K miles already, you really do get to drive your Mini, nice.

about 14k... but was really fun to do it and something i been wanting to do for a long time.  it took alot of work though and i happened to be in a place where i had the time to do it. to me though it was more fun then work and the almost finished product is awsome, you just have to get used to everyone and thier brother wanting to talk to you about your car and how you did it.

82, so what did this set you back, start to finish? You don't have to answer of course! I'm just curious...

It's been fun, but this place is done. I have no hatred, and appreciate the good times. But this place now belongs to Tony and his pink mini.

Very nice glad to see you made it though. You should have my phone number. Give me a call and we can work something out. I have a request for 1275 power but have been short a core. Thanks for remembering me. Regards Steve (CTR)

thought i would update this, i have had the engine in for 5 months now and put 5k miles on it, is a blast to drive and there are so many options to change or mod, got a wide band, wide flares and the flip hinges and installed them a couple weeks back.  i did it a little backwards and put the flip front on it after the conversion was done but its just the way i did it.  i really love the car this way it is very fun to drive and with a job that ticks you off from time to time its nice to jump in this and blow off some steam.  looking at a supercharger set up to go where the ac used to be for some more fun.

Steve,

im picking up the 1275 and subframe and all the fixings this weekend so they will be here in newport news if your interested let me know ill bring it by the shop. let me know

Blue mini with yellow top is son Alex's mini. I get to drive it another year then his from there on. It's an 85 1000 E with metal sun roof, large left tank and Cooper S right. 7.5 Cooper S front brakes and super fins rear. Adjustable suspension all around and currently on 12s. Powered by 67 1275 Cooper S engine bored to 1360CC. Engine is dressed out as a 90 Cooper carbed unit with HIF44. The brakes are late master/booster unit on right side with cross over torque tube. ( thanks to meet the speaker ) Newton half leather and three clock center pod. I have built a special tranny that allows it to run 70 mph at 3000 rpm. Have had it to 96 at just over 4000. Drop by and we can compare notes.

BTW, this power unit will come out before handing it over to a new driver. Back to 998 power. Safer and cheaper to drive for a high school kid. Steve (CTR)

PS I have a set of 165 12s mounted and balanced if interested.

Congrats good luck with it!

I took mine for a drive here in jersey recently and I'm pretty excited about it to! It really is an easy swap I had mine swapped over quick then got annoyed and came, back and got,it running but it got on hold for a year due to family/ business issues.Spent a day with cleaning up the brakes and fuel side of,things and, took it for a ride. Now waiting on time to get the front end finished.

Please post adjustment settings for alignment and how you did it...I,need to do mine!

//www.zealautowerks.com/transcalc.php

thats a cool calculator if anyone needs it to figure gears
i got a s8g trans and it works out like this
1st gear 3.25 31mph
2nd gear 1.9 53mph
3rd gear 1.25 80mph
4th gear .9 110mph
5th gear .75 134mph
4.25 final drive
thats with my 165/65/12 tires

sorry so late in response, those are some tall gears and i was haveing an issue with shifting out of vtec and haveing to re engage vtec, for example 7k rpms in second gear shift and be at 4.5k rpms in 3rd gear. this was anoying so i got a hondata and changed my vtec to 4200 rpms so that i dont come out of vtec while getting on it.  it has been a very enjoyable ride.  i need a wide band to finish the tuneing, it is running rich for safety purposes till i can get a good tune onit.  torque steer is not to bad, definately there but not a real concern with this set up.  i really am happy with it and learned so much about this car and the engine.

I have almost 1k miles on it now, I ended up towing it from tn to va but not cause it wouldnt make it but because my wife came out and we then had two cars out there, so i drove hers pulling mine.

steve, who drives the blue with yellow top mini in newport news?

Way to go 82Mini on a new world record!  The D15B looks right at home in there.

Now that you have it aligned what's the torque steer like in all the gears at full throttle?

And my Mini Marcos kit car...there are how many of those in the 'states? I had to go into mine having no clue if my fat ass would even fit inside. I just figured that when there were problems, I'd need to fix them. and I'm getting there. Yeah, I'm a year slower (and counting) than I'd hoped, but I'm making progress, and that's good for me. My car is all new parts (except a few I could only find used), and I had made a spreadsheet of all the parts I'd need. I'm on track to come in within 10%  of my original budget.

I dislike that people are so judgmental and rude here. There's use in critical advice and warnings, but after that, we're all adults and can decide what's right for ourselves, and the personal taunts, counter bets (which aren't in a lighthearted tone), etc all bring me back to grade school. There's a big difference between "this is a big project and will cost thousands more and take 2x as long as you expect" (which is useful and largely correct advice) and some of the replies here.

zerobelow,

I use to have a Corvair, it was a 63 Monza, great car ended up selling it as a project, which did not help with making any money(like that happens), its a shame how under valued they are. I have a bunch of things like books and such at home that I am not using anymore if you would like them, just PM me. Not sure what year you have, I would assume its the more desirable '64-'69, I know the body changed in '65, I have noticed everyone wants the '64 because of the rear end, and other items that werent found on previous years.

82mini,

Congratulations on the build, you made everything look really easy, and from the pictures the Mini looks amazing. I may have to buy a Mini shell and do the same, but I would probably not be able to complete it any where near the time you took. That was seriously impressive! Now go have fun with your Mini.

82mini,

After seeing so many of these conversions being abandoned I was one of those who didn't think you would meet your completion date. Thanks for proving me wrong.

Congratulations on the build.

That looks to be about 48 days from start to running pretty impressive.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.
