Some might not care...but 2,000 views on the (MINI) Clubman Register looking in on ROO's cross continent travel.  Those Modern Mini people are interested in the Classics!l

No, it is not any smaller.

No it's not the diesel model.

It even fits with Keith's Mallory dual point distributor and adjustable oil pressure knob.

1980-1985 Chevy Luv Isuzu Trooper starter $24.99 at Autozone in the USA $15.00 core charge. Has the selenoid too.  That's what we fitted to the race car at Mid-Ohio. Requires 5 minutes of filing /slotting the holes inwards 3/16

Lifetime warranty.

Last day hiccup was actually 2 hiccups:

First, hot lead to oil pressure light switch on tranny got loose, shorted and the blown fuse took out the brake & signal lights and fuel & temp gauges & tach.  Happened just as we left the 110 km/h Hwy. 1 at Abbotsford.  Connection now clean & tight!

Second, ROO would not start at last fuel fill-up before getting the last 15 miles to home...so push start.  Power post on starter wobbly...a little pressure with insulated pliers and starter turns over just fine.  Will need to remove/repair starter.

Thanks to my son Jeremy who came over to assist in the fault diagnoses.  He also brought me a box of Solenoids to rebuild??

Have Falken slicks LOL available cheap!

Glad to read that y'all made it home safely, Rick. It was good to see you again at both events this year and to spend time here and there. Take care of that Tasmania hat ... it's a unique keepsake and souvenir of yet another epic drive. Be well and never lose your spirit, my friend.

Actually I have never been uncomfortable in stock Mini seats...well once, after I bolted a safe to the floor under my seat in ROO before the test drive from Brisbane to Sydney return.

As the suspension took a beating on the high country roads in New South Wales I ended up sitting on the safe.  You could say I was "posed" until it came out!

Some stats with my first cup of coffee...

ROO - All miles (odo accurate...speedo not so much, thus the GPS), all fuels, volumes converted from litres and US gallons to Imperial gallons:

33.84 Miles per Imperial Gallon

Comment - less than the transcontinental runs in POOH with 998 (39.6) and 1380 (40.4 with trailer).  ROO's FD 3.65:1, POOH 998 3.44:1, 1380 2.95:1

Comment - Looks like a minimum 10% improvement in miles per gallon after switching to higher octane fuels (maybe more but did not note whether 88, 89, 91 etc. vs. 87)

Service needed - 2 height adjustments Kootenay Lake, B.C., White River, Ontario (crap rubber cones), 2 clutch adjustments (one after stop nut lost jam and walked inward in Iowa), 1 tire puncture repaired Hot Springs, S. Dak....and macgyvered solutions (one re dizzy leaving Winnipeg, Man., other re coil in Indianapolis, Ind.) to keep ignition bits dry in fierce rain and wind scenarios.

Replaced plugs and serviced all ignition connections Junction I90 & 287 in Montana but just bad fuel in West Yellowstone and later in Troy (both in Montana).

Switched tires front to rear etc. and concerned that we would make it home on what was left of the Falkens.  Next set Yokies.

Ran on slightly lower tire air pressure across Canada (saw lowest mpg - all on 87) and bumped up to 32 psi on return trip, which may also have helped mpg figures.

1098 happiest at 62 mph, no oil consumption...did not like running at 70 mph when it sipped a little oil. (still does NOT leak oil)

DAY& 28...a day of rest at home!  Not sure how many more long trips I have in me but love the time on the road.

Do need more HP as the bog standard 1098 struggled on ascending the steeper grades...and came home to 110 km/h on Hwy. 1 at Hope, B.C. to find folks shooting off Hwy. 5 upped to 120 (from 110) onto Hwy. 1 at more than 120 km/h.

The semis and gravel trucks with puops are barely doing 70 km/h when they come from the on ramps to merge into traffic.

50 years ago 110 km/h (approx. the 70 mph then) was doable because there was NO traffic volume.  Much different story today and the high speed crashes will come sure as the all knowing one grows apples.

Laundry is dry...think I'll go wash my Tasmania 'minifest' hat.  It's earned a clean up.

Mini club meeting tonight so right back at it.

>>Glad to hear you made it back without incident..<< Huh? What would Rick's road reports be without all the "incidents?" I don't think my windscreen ding is bad enough for replacement and other than that, Mur's woodie ran without incident, as did my car PDX-Calgary-PDX. I will say, though, that being along on this trip with Mur, and crossing paths with Rick, Mike, Chuck, Dean, Dan etc., I'm encouraged to make longer and longer road trips, to add to Penticton, Tahoe, AZ and the backroads across Oregon.

Home after 7,053 miles...at 4:15 pm today (PDT) in Pitt Meadows, B.C.  No further fuel issues after getting back into Canada...just met by new higher speed limits on Fraser Valley highways.

Funny...hit by an electrical short on leaving the higher speed Hwy. 1 West, knocking out the brake lights, turn signals, fuel & temp gauges.  Blown fuse replaced in Silverdale...brake/signal lights back...then all went away.  We have a short!

Will sort tomorrow...doing laundry now!

12"x60x165 Falkens are shot!  Suspension needs a rebuild, since the NEW in June doughnuts (in Mini Spares wrap) were CRAP.

No further problems with clutch...oil used only on higher rpm +4,500 running of 1098.

Now just after 6 am in Christina Lake, B.C. Made the 400 mile/650 km run from Browning with a hiccup climbing the Salmo-Creston Skyway after a 2nd bad fuel load in Troy, Montana revealed its ugly head. Gave the carb some choke to help and got over the Kootenay Pass. Still missing on the downslope.

Good fuel from the ESSO in Salmo and has run fine since. Got over the Bombi Summit to Castlegar and the Bonanza Summit to Christina Lake without incidence in spite of the same high... ambient temps.

So 2 loads of bad fuel from name outlets in Montana, as the NAPA parts man had confirmed...I was getting new ignition leads, looking for coil and new dizzy cap, thinking it was something wrong with ROO. Nope, oil industry doing it to folks in that part of the US for some reason.

Rockies were more visible yesterday a.m. but we opted to use US 2 to go west to near Bonner's Ferry, Idaho before swinging north to Porthill and into Canada at Creston...then the steep climb over the Skyway.

I had emailed to and posted LURCH Alert here before leaving Browning and...I speculated that Justin might be waiting for us at the Kootenay Pass summit. No...he was waiting at the ESSO in Salmo...with his Mom & Dad for us to arrive. With road construction delays in Montana and the slow climb up the Skyway we were 20 minutes late. Good to visit!

Justin's Mom noticed his ears go up at the mention of MMW 2015 being held in the Fraser Valley.

As we climbed over the Bombi, Justin & his Dad followed in JB's Jeep while Mom followed in the AC equipped sedan. After crossing the Columbia River it was goodbye with arms waving!

Now...to make it over the Anarchist, Richter, Sunday summits and past Manning Park to Hope and on to home!

Will summarize the trip after getting home...total miles, fuel...wait to you see what little is left of the Falkens!  Later I will take up the fake doughnuts!

Rick,

Bad fuel seems to be a problem. Had a service engine soon light appear when towing to Mid Ohio.Yet van was perfect as all tune up was verified before we left. Next gas stop topped up with super and the light went away. It's only a 2000 Safari but it does not like the Ethanol. Stuck to Sunoco gas on the way back and never had another engine light!!!

You are  so  lucky to be able to take this trip. It is amazing. The rain..is a pain but it' sbetter than snow!!!

Keep up the good work and good times. Thanks for posting.

So you crossed an 8,000 + ft pass.

I forget if you have an SU carb. If I remember terminology correctly, SUs keep air volume/velocity constant and meter fuel, but do not adjust for air density/mass.  Air density at 8000 ft is about 25% less than at sea level. You would have been running richer. Maybe that was a good thing while climbing
