Wish like hell I had saved a mini or two for myself. Last mini was a re shell 1071S I imported. After that one I stopped buying

Now into mustangs again. 1965 GT350 clone and a 66 Shelby GT350

Just sold an SSP 5.0 state trooper mustang and the wife has a 72 MG convertible

Dad has a 64.5 early convertible and I just bought a red 64.5 to resell

The one I miss the most is the Green cooper S sold to a dealer or the machinist. Lovely cars.

Okay, don't be deluded by your own car

Why does anyone care what his car is? Info one posted a pic and details then no one would comment and the owner would be none the wiser. It's nice, it's his and he loves and enjoys it

You don't tell an old sick person they are dying, should they not believe otherwise?

Being deluded doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

I gotta say it's absolute crap to post about someone else's car and go on and on about it in a public forum

Who gives a crap what it is. It's his car, he loves it and isn't that what the hobby is all about?

Would any of you be happy if it was seized from him?

I think this thread should be deleted.

People take this stuff WAY too seriously. I will say this over and over again like I have said in posts. Be thankful you have the luxery to have one. Who cares what year you have. The purist thing cracks me up and bragging rights. Who cares. Why would you put someones car down and them. Let the guy think he has a 66 what is it bothering you for. Its not up to you to convince him. Let him learn on his own when he orders parts. Lighten up people life is too short.

It really is not that the car in question is a '66 or a '96.

It is about bragging rights.

Bragging about owning an early car.  Early cars (to me an early car is pre-'68) are becoming scarce and more desirable than newer cars. The earlier the car, the better.

Bragging about owning a later car. Later cars (newer than 25 years) show that someone beat "the MAN".  The newer the car, the better. If the owner wanted a newer car.

Bragging about knowing the difference. The bragger shows he has the knowledge and experience to know the exactly when a car was built just by looking at it.

Bragging is competition. The loser in the competition is the owner of a car who believed he was buying something else than what he got, then finds out the truth.

The loser may like his car, but he will always know he got cheated from what he wanted and what it was supposed to be.

A loser can become a winner by changing his expectations. If the loser decides what he got is actually better than what he wanted, he can brag about what a desirable car he has.

A classic Mini is a classic Mini. None have been made for about 15 years. Any car of any year is desirable. Just owning one is something to brag about.

Let us celerate!

Russ

Kerm

Thanks Kerm. I think most people who own these and other classic cars do it because they truly enjoy them and enjoying meeting like minded people. My wife & I enjoy meeting them on weekends at local cars & coffee gatherings. Never once have I heard anyone saying anthing other nice, complimentary things about someones' pride and joy. I'm still learning about these classic Mini's and really appreciate people who offer their advice and expertise. We do the same for new owners of classic Porsches, 356, early 911's. Thanks again for your comment.

Bruce

Bruce,

In the above comments I may be wrong but I don't see anyone putting down the car for what it IS but for what it is NOT. As I have said, it's a NICE CAR but you need to know what you have. I don't know the original poster but obviously at some show the car has been displayed as a "1966" and folks here are saying it's not. As someone pointed out, and since you are new to Minis, you have to know what you have when there is a need to repair something and you have to order parts. Because there are few parts which are interchangeable between a 1996 and a 1966 Mini.

Since you are into early Porsches. The way I see it, and to use the Porsche 911 as an analogy, if someone took a 1990 Porsche 911 (I know a 1990 isn't really a 911) and displayed it as a 1966 Porsche 911 wouldn't you feel obligated to tell them that what they really had was NOT a 1966 Porsche 911?

Someone being a purist has nothing to do with it. I have a Bitsa which I built between 1999 and 2001 which contains parts from every year Mini production from 1959 thru 2000. It's registered as a 1971. A new Heritage shell was purchased from BMHT in 1999. Besides the shell(1999) here are a few of the items in Bitsa: Parking lights(1959), RH tank(1966), LH tank(1968), subframe front(1976), wiper motor(1971), interior mirror(2000). Anyway, far from being a purist car.

In my first post I didn't mention who the seller was, but based on you noting his location people were able to determine who he is. I don't think this is doing him any favors.
