88 would make sense as that's when the Jet Black Ltd edition was released

So a friend of mine reminded me that when we first got my,mini it was red and had paint flaking off and black underneath. We scraped and sanded some and seem a spot on the car that was hard to make out but had said Jet Black. After a year or so I realized that it was actually a special edition? Any ways to distinguish if it was an original one or not?? If so it's a vtec one now...Its tagged as an 72 but I believe it's an 88.
