I own an early 1970s car that was an owner-import back in the mid-late 70s and it has a CARB Compliance Retrofit sticker on it. Hmmm, wonder if I could go into the printing business...

As I have found out recently if the car does not have a 49 state legal EPA sticker on it it cannot be registered in California. I have a 73 Ozzie Mini that simply will not go under any curcumstances as it never had a sticker and obviously they never came here to be able to get a duplicate sticker. so it's now a parts car..............

Also tried to get a customers 75 Canadian Spitfire registered but again no sticker no regisration. but at least they did import them in 75 so it's possable to get one for this car even if it meens buying a used bonnet.....................

I would doubt it with a V tec in it. Legally today it would not be legal to import it into the Country.

I will Al, just as I suspected, you're fanning the flames for your own benefit "helping us out in California..", who's responsible for all the revin's here? may be worth the State's time to file a class action against predatory & illegal revin activity. That's an awful dog to have associated in the game....

Who's responsible for all the re-VINs out there?  That's a good question, but I don't think the answer is Big Al.  As an individual who has delivered quite a few Minis into the fair state of California for other people, and I have to say, MOST of the Minis that Big Al has sold out that way, I have yet to deliver any re-VINs for him.  I have (on the other hand) picked up a couple of "non-conforming" ie, post 75 Minis out there that Big Al has bought.  I don't think he is stirring the pot, just trying to get the info out there so someone doesn't make a huge $$$ mistake.

It's been a while Chief, when are you headed out this aways next?

Everybody:

There is really not much change in the law.

The DMV web pages Spank posted explain it better than the Vehicle Industry News, even though the DMV puts out the Vehicle Industry News.

The Vehicle Industry News is mostly concerned with "49 state cars" from back when the U.S. car makers had to make different cars for sale in California than in the other 49 states.

One blaring difference between the Motor Industry News and thhe DMV web pages is the first year of manufacture the law applies.

The Vehicle Industry News shows vehicles from 1966 and the DMV web page shows 1968.

U.S. made cars were first equipped with exhaust emission devices in 1966 while imported vehicles did not have them until 1968.  U.S. made cars before 1966 and imports before 1968 were "uncontrolled" and, since the U.S. EPA did not exist until January 1, 1868, there will be no EPA or California emission compliance documentation for them. Also, there is no smog check requirement for them, but any non-factory modifications to 1966+ U.S. or 1968+ foreign cars are considered tampering with the emission control system.

That last part is why I do not recommend trying to bring in the '66 or '68 and newer cars.

There may be a lot of humor and frustration about the California air polution laws, but they do make the air cleaner. For thousands of years, people have dumped all kinds of crap in the air, oceans, water and land with no concern about the effects. When the air has so much stuf in it that you can see what you are coughing, and children are getting lung diseases previously only seen in old smokers, then we have a problem.

I love my state. So did my father and my grandfather back to 1889. The trouble is too many other people like my state, but many of them do not play nice.

If you bring a car to California, please play nice.

Russ

Superoldguy:

As l said, "I have no dog in this fight"

Only trying to help, It would be a shame if a California resident imported a mini from out of State and then found out that a 1968-1974 classic mini could not be registered-

I know that if new legislation were passed in Ontario affecting any classic mini that l would want someone to point it out to me-

Terry. just source a 1964-1967 UK Moke and you will be good to go-

And, "just as I suspected, you're fanning the flames for your own benefit "helping us out in California..", / As you may know, l have been out of the mini game since last November & will have no monetary gain from what happens in California
