And, while we're at it, let's all hope that the drain plug threads are not stripped. We'll never hear the end of it.
A lot of folks use a washer with a rubber insert instead of the brass crush washer. (see picture) It's carried in most auto parts stores. I'm pretty sure a 14mm one theads right on to the drain plug. It doesn't take much torque to get a good seal. And, your sump plug threads will thank you for it.

+1 for Valvoline VR1 20/50
I like using the K&N filters because of the nut on the bottom I find it's easier to remove.
Change the oil often it's cheap insurance

Robster...why would you put Mobile1 in ??
Go and get a filter for an MG Midget..NAPA should have it and it will be a WIX or just ask for a 1342.
Then go to Walmart and buy some VR1 20/50 Valvoline .... or if they don't have that some Castrol GrandPrix motorcycle 4 stroke 20/50
Change oil and filter now ..... especially if you don't know what the previous owner used for oil!

All vintage racing and SCCA (GTL class) require an a-series motor. There might be a class in the USA that allows a V-Tech. In Canada where CACC rules apply a V-Tech would be allowed in the GT class. You can use a generic oil filter. I use Quaker State PH3600 and other similar which is bigger than the stock. You won't find a Unipart filter at Auto Zone.

If you change just the oil filter, prefill the filter with fresh oil, let it soak into the filter and top off . After carefully installing (making sure to lube the seal ring with fresh oil), restart engine, check for leaks, shut down, recheck oil for correct fill.
Why are you asking about race engines ?

My advise - if you're going to do it, do it right. Buy new oil (and don't use 10w30 in your engine without first doing research on the forum about which oil you should use in these engines), buy a new filter, and do the whole job. And I would _absolutely_ do it on a car that's new to me (first oil change).
But to answer your question sure, you can change the oil filter without changing *most* of the oil. I say most because there's about a quart stored inside that filter that you want to replace.

If you have $550 for a Vtech conversion, you have $20 for new oil!

Not if the engine is running...very messy and an environmental no, no (but not a big spill).
