What is this concept of power steering that you refer to?
Most likely cause is your power steering pump giving a heads up before it fails...lots of info on NAM about this relatively common issue in the BMW MINIs.

We have a 2011 S Convertible, approaching 70K miles. On a cold engine start there is a brief whine that sounds like a power steering whine from low fluid.
1) Is there a power steering pump and reservoir; and if so, where is it located. If that isn't the cause, any ideas why? Thanks, Jeff
