Welp, today she sold.

I have to say I am going to miss her! Restoring this car was an amazing project, and I have had such fun/great times with it. Awesome little car going to a very lucky new owner!

Since I am sure the question of price is going to come up, I can say I took a lower, but very fair offer that I think we both are happy with.

It is black undercoated.  I did the same to mine but wondered about originality there.  Actually I would have done it anyway as my DD no matter what, but does anybody want to weigh in on this question?

Even if not factory offered (and I don't know) I wonder if it was a dealer option here, like at Qvale for instance?

Ahh the 1969 'S'. Because they didn't have an ID plate there are more running around now than were made.

I think the 'Mk 2 S' had different master cylinders and two screw tail lights? Just my two cents.

Still a very nice mini.

PS. grab the correct oil pressure gauge too.

Absolutely love the wood wheel!!!!!

If I decide to keep her I just might consider poping one of those on.

Most new owners would remove that wheel anyways, a period correct Les Leston or something similar would look good and maybe suit a new owner. I wouldn't worry about it as it looks fine the way it is.

Ahhh, you guys are making me want to do the corrections.

The care came with an after market wheel, so I purchased and restored the one in the pics. Guess I put the wrong one on. :(

Oh, I totally forgot, there is a casting video for the show Bull Run we did a few years back:

Thats the one,  the correct centre badge will say BMC , sometimes hard to find , your car is probably an early mk2 because it has a mk1 heater ,or it has beeen swapped at some time.

This is the correct wheel...
//www.ebay.com.au/itm/Original-leyland-mini-steering-wheel-/261624494109?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cea08f81d

But it has the wrong badge in the middle, the correct one says BMC.

Your car shouldn't have an ID plate. It was built during the point when ID plates were discontinued and Compliance plates were commenced.

I notice the flasher/blinker/indicator can is under the hood. On Australian cars they are mounted under the dash so that you can hear them.

Thanks for all the kind words, I really do apreciate all the praise for the work I did on her. It was one of the toughest projects I have ever undartaken.

I will keep my eye out for the steering wheel pic, I am curious what it looks like.

I agree, the paint hurts the value, unlike the wheels, steeringwheel, etc. you cant just change the color all that easily. That said, I still have no regrets, she is really an eye catcher in red.

As for the the id plate, its missing, but the vin number is stamped into the body in at least 1 place. Will try to attach a pic.

Sounds like a great resto and it is nice that you did it the way you like , the reclining seats were never offered as an option on Ozy minis , I will try to find apic of the correct steering wheel for you , 69 cars did have some variations in the steering wheel depending on if it was early 69 or late 69 , and did I see an i.d plate in the engine bay?

Beautiful restoration Ion.  I like everything that you have done with it.  So your's won't make it onto the grass at Pebble Beach, does it really matter when it looks this good?  Plus it is one of the cleanest Mini's I have ever seen, might even rival Jim's (MOASF member) in the cleanliness department.

I love seeing Mini's in this condition, just brings a smile to my face - as all Minis should.

Well done and I hope you get every penny you are asking!

Congrats to you Ion for building it the way you wanted it, as you said you had no plans to sell it. Everything you have done that is "not factory" except for the paint is easily changed. AFAIK the recliners were available as S options and are imo the most comfortable Mini seats around. It has some nice period mods the lights, tachometer and alternator (not sure about that alternator bracket though). LOL.

Good luck with the sale.

Edit: recliners were offered on UK cars not known if they were offered on Aus Mini's.

Sorry I haven’t replied sooner, I only am now seeing the thread.

So, about the magnet comment, he is absolutely right! Cars are often rolling around with more Bondo than metal on them and that’s not good! Let me tell you what I know. I disassembled the car completely so all that was delivered to the body shop was the body shell. But, before I brought it there I had it baking soda blasted (the best way to strip a car). I was at the shop at least 2 times a week while it was being worked on and I can tell you that the work those guys did was incredible. I actually saw them straighten the metal to almost perfect by hand.

So, when I built the car, I had no intention of selling it. So yes, I broke a cardinal rule of restoration and painted the car a color that is incorrect for the year/model. I just really didn’t like the Australian colors for 69. Believe me I struggled with this for quite a while, and I am still glad I went with the red.

As for the rest of the things mentioned, the reclining seats are NOT original to this car, but as far as I know (I could be wrong) the reclining seats were available in 69 as an option for minis, although extremely rare.

As for the steering wheel and rims, I thought I had those right. It does have the correct Morris center cap (hard to come by). So, can anyone send me a pic of a correct 69 wheel for this car?

I do realize 38k is allot for a mini, but know that it cost me well over 60k to do the restoration. It is also pretty rare, so for the right person this is a true find!

Thanks for all the posts

Like I said very nice car but for that sort of money I , and people shopping in that price bracket , would want some of the details to be more original . There are cooper s getting that sort of money and more in OZ but to achieve that price they are more original , I hope the owner finds the right buyer who will appreciate the car for what it is , those seats look comfortable !!!

Ok, the scoop on the models is that the Mini was just cute "background" for one of their portfolio shoots!  It certainly makes for a very appealing way to present the car!

Al, can I get one of those T-shirts?

They seem like nice enough girls, but their shoe choice is not appropriate for driving.

Oh great comments about the models!!  This car has made an appearance on this forum before... someone put a link to the Macy's commercial years ago!

However:

"Extremely nice ..but one should be very careful when throwing out claims such a "nicest' or "most original"...  when there are any number of glaring errors apparent."

Now, now, I never said "most original"!  If you gents have followed me at all, you know I'm much more "resto-mod" than "originality wonk"!  Have you seen the tilt column I built for my 66 S? The 13" wheels?  The giant velocity stacks sticking out of the heart shaped hole in the bonnet?  The metallic green and "Super Sport" stripes (more Camaro than Mini!)?    Alright then, it's one thing to play devils advocate but it's a real stretch to assume that red car is full of bondo!   Try to relax a little and not get so hostile if someone else's car is not exactly your dream!  I hardly think different color wheels to the taste of the owner is a "glaring error"!

You may remember the 'clone' 67 Cooper S I featured on my website when I rebuilt the gearbox earlier this year. It was a Cooper 998 that had been "essified" with all the right parts but had an A+ rod-change that I had built maybe 10 years ago.... That got panned on here with opinions like "not worth 10K".  That has sold TWICE in recent months for mid 20s.  Just enjoy the fact that your Mini might be worth even more than you think!
