The heater I got is a MK4. (Connections on the right hand side and really close together)

Yes, it is the wrong heater.

Not trying to be wise, but you're putting a heater into a car that it wasn't made for. Not saying it won't work, but you certainly can't expect it to be "plug-and-play." You may have to get creative and adapt, modify or fabricate to get it to fit.

Sorry, not sure why I was thinking 10/32 1/4 NF of course is correct. Not that it matter here, but the later heaters have a notch in the rear to clear the later brake cross over tube. I had to make a coupe of straps to support the rear of my heater below the tube. This reduced the toe room for a LHD gas pedal. That's a mini giving a little here for a little over there. the studs are quarter inch UNF. They allow the heater to be mounted with a bias to the right for LHD or to the left if you have a RHD car. I expect having the heater hoses on the right hand side will be a problem if your car is still RHD. In any case there are four openings below the switch panel in the sheet metal, and you can snap those lame clips that accept screws over the openings you need to fasten the front of the heater. It is probably all covered up as the NZ market used different stuff for their original heaters.

Not sure I follow your question. When I built out 85 1000 E from a bare shell I did not like the late model lower dask pad. I did not install it and reinstalled the heater. The rear of the unit had a couple of lengths of 10/32 all thread one out each side of the heater to hang on a couple of brackets attached to the fire wall. The front of the heater is held to the lower dash rail with two screws going up though a sheet metal angle running across the heater housing. Due to the lask of a lower dash rail the heater controls stick out further than the rail. It looked funny at first but after driving it for 13 years and it does put out heat ( only mini I have ever had that you have to reduce heat on a 20 degree day once warmed up ) I can live with it. This may not be what you are talking about. I'll see if I can get a picture posted. Steve (CTR)

Did a Mk5 a few weeks ago, and from what I remember....on a RHD car....left side of heater has a protruding bolt which fits into a HOLE, and then the Right side bolt drops into a SLOT. It was not a difficult job. Can't imagine they changed much from Mk3 to 5?.

Question: What's it like driving a mini?

My Answer: Like riding around on an angry leaf blower.
