you can be sure they're going through these characters cell phones, and finding out who they were in contact with. I think they'll be able to go on the offense instead of defense. With all the forms of communications being watched these days, I think this kind of stuff will not continue.
I'm an optimist.

Rick
Thanks for posting this. It is not really off topic as it applies to all of us, more and more.
the only silver lining in this latest episode is that if this stuff is happening even in places like Canada, then maybe it will wake up all the do-gooders.
Lankford please run for President.

Sad news, that's for sure. The world has indeed changed, and not necessarily for the better. We had a bomb threat 21Oct2014 which closed downtown Copenhagen for most of the day. Turned out that it was a 17-year old kid on some sort of youth service Internet chat (provided by Børns Vilkår, der administrerer Børnetelefonen (Children's Rights, which administers the Child Helpline))

Right Dan,
We had crossed to Sault Ste. Marie, then headed east to Sudbury and on to the Ottawa River valley...on our way to Mini Meet East 2000. We were in Ottawa, stayed with friends, used the Mini to get downtown, to the Hill and it was before Canada Day.
We celebrated Canada Day in Quebec with Fireflies and Fireworks from an orchard vantage point...the Minis had permission and drove in among the trees.
The Hill was a busy place, all the English Language tours were full so we joined a French Language tour. Enjoyed our brief visit..had first been to Ottawa for a conference at the new Carleton University in 1962. Canoed the Rideau, pub crawled with a couple of Ottawa beauties...and have returned numerous times over the years for business conferences, directors meetings, public service...with John R. of Winnipeg I skated several rough miles of the frozen Rideau south of the "public rink" near Confederation Square, though I do not recommend that nonsense to others.
Tragic day in our Capital...some of all of us died a little there today.

Yep.
Things aren't what they used to be.(sigh)
Parliament Hill has been off-limits to public vehicles for several years now. Rick's photo was taken probably a day or two before Canada Day (July 1st). All the vans and trucks are there for set-up of the stage for the Canada Day celebrations where a few friends (maybe 20-30 thousand) get together to party on the Parliament Hill lawn. YOu can see the stage in the background.
The soldier that died was on ceremonial sentry duty. He fell right near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which contains the remains of a fallen solder of WW1, which were repatriated a few years ago from France.
For a time the bridges to Quebec were closed, schools, the Rideau Centre mall, Ottawa University and many of the uptown office buildings were in lock-down.

i'm in Kanata, suburb west of Ottawa. Rick, in years previous to your trip to Ottawa in 2000, cars could drive on the circular drive right up to the front doors of the center block. Our world has changed a lot in our lifetimes. Its unfortunate that clashes and history from other parts of the world are brought to our north american shores but we had better all get used to it. Travel in certain countries and its common to see heavily armed military on the streets. Checkpoints. Lots of questions. Its coming here soon.
when she said "its so small" she meant the car right?

Soldier shot at Confederation Square has died in hospital, 2 more in hospital one shot inside the Parliament Buildings, one wounded by a ricochet apparently during the Confederation Square shooting...no update on the Rideau Centre shooting.
The soldier who has died was from a Hamilton, Ontario military reserve unit - reserve units take turns providing guards for the National war Memorial. Whether he and his colleague had ammunition, i don't know.
The Sargeant at Arms in the House of Commons shot and killed the shooter inside the Parliament Buildings, while MPs & staff and others shut themselves into offices/committee/caucus rooms.
RCMP are about to hold a press briefing shortly (+2 PM CST)on the situation as it exists.
US Embassy - across the street from Parliament Hill - locked down as are all public buildings, schools etc.

Gunfire erupted in Ottawa this morning. First person shot was a soldier on guard at our National War Memorial in Confederation Square. A second shooting incident has been taking place innside our Parliament buildings (equivalent to Senate and House) with several dozen shots fired. A third shooting incident has occurred in Rideau Square east of Confederation Square in downtown Ottawa.
So far, 1 shooter is dead and 2 victims are in hospital
All this two days after an Islamist radical supporter of ISIS killed one soldier in Quebec and injured a second by driving at and hitting them while they walked in a parking lot. The radical was chased by police and when he emerged from his upside down vehicle with a knife he was shot and killed by police officers.
We know from reports after recent parliamentary hearings, that neither the RCMP nor CISIS (national police and security agencies respectively) have the resources to surveil several dozens (maybe 100 or more persons) of radicalized ISIS supporters 24/7.
The threat level was increased only two days ago.
It appears that the actions by radicals thus far are Lone Wolf - ISIS has encouraged supporters in Canada to run people down with cars.
