Bob,
Someone down-under had a similar idea. Dunno if it'll go as fast/far as what you're working on...

I just finished a electric conversion  of a fiberglass  29 kit car on a vw chassis   , put in a 72 hp ac motor and a 17 kw  96 volt battery pack from a new wrecked chevy volt. goes like stink  very light weight , you leave it in third  to drive around  should get 85 mph top speed  ( car is not aerodymanic   has  big frontal wings )  and 60 to 70 mile range

0 to 60 times is in the 6 sec mark.

the moke look alike will a be  an all aluminum version ( live by the  salt sea so rust a problem) rear wheel drive  and slightly wider   will have a hard top of solar panels  ( yes not enough to drive off but extends the milage)  it will be only a   2 seater ,  batteries goes in the front and rear seat area .  should be fun to make and drive here in the bahamas
