Thanks for the info. OP should still consider the ignition switch as a possible cause of his/her problem.

The 2004 R53's do require an RFID chip. Even the valet key has an RFID chip in it. Do a search in Google Images on "Mini Cooper valet key" and the first picture that shows up is one of the plastic key opened up showing the five-sided RFID chip.

my view  = 2 possible cuplrits.

Key Immobilizer ring--- ( Transponder) that reads your key in the steering colum- Says OK proper key _ STart.

 

or - Clutch Safey Switch= on the clutch pedal assembly - Must depress clutch for car to start.

  what i'm kind of putting together here is when you turn the key to start the eng. doesn't turn over....correct.???

Over the past few weeks, I have been experiencing issues with starting my car.  First, I have replaced the original batteries in my key fob and car.  Now, I'm leaning toward the issue being a neutral safety switch or start inhibitor.  Today, I tried to start the car.  No success!  As an alternative, I had to push it and pop the clutch.  I left-out a key morsel of information; it is a manual transmission.

If this is the case, where is it located?

How can it be bypassed to confirm the issue?

What the recommended replacement part number (OEM)?
