Excellent! I'll look at the ignition switch, too.
Again, thank you for all of your help!

Thanks for the info. OP should still consider the ignition switch as a possible cause of his/her problem.

I don't think a 2004 MINI depends on a key with a transponder, as the valet key which easily starts the car is simply a solid plastic item.
The problem is most likely the ignition switch. I had an intermittent starting problem with my 2004 S and traced the problem to a faulty switch. It costs about $100 and takes about 15 minutes to replace.

my view = 2 possible cuplrits.
Key Immobilizer ring--- ( Transponder) that reads your key in the steering colum- Says OK proper key _ STart.
or - Clutch Safey Switch= on the clutch pedal assembly - Must depress clutch for car to start.
thats what your going with.....?????

Over the past few weeks, I have been experiencing issues with starting my car. First, I have replaced the original batteries in my key fob and car. Now, I'm leaning toward the issue being a neutral safety switch or start inhibitor. Today, I tried to start the car. No success! As an alternative, I had to push it and pop the clutch. I left-out a key morsel of information; it is a manual transmission.
If this is the case, where is it located?
How can it be bypassed to confirm the issue?
What the recommended replacement part number (OEM)?
