Another "old Home find" (or two).

Our first house was built sometime around 1900. Nothing fancy - a working-man's home that had been "done over a few times.. We paid about what the land was worth... lets just say the movie "The Money Pit" wasn't all that funny. We worked at it for 10 years.

One of our first challenges was to replace the water line (and sewer) from the street to the house because the City guy said it was leaking. Having spent all our money on a down payment, we had to dig the 30 foot or so trench (8 feet deep near the street) by hand after work in the evenings. One evening, while we sat on the side of the hole, I saw something dull brown and circular. It turned out to be a 1901 Canadian penny. The next day, sitting at the same spot, my wife found a 1902 penny. (These are the big old ones over an inch wide.) Needless to say, the "dig" went alot slower after that, but alas that's all we got.

Much later, when stripping out the old interior I found a really nice old ball-pein hammer, about 6 ounce that someone had lost down a wall. It is a really handy size for tapping small parts, say on a Mini.

Tearing out an old kitchen, I found some poor woman's wedding band that had fallen down behind the sink pipes somehow.

.

"Hang on a minute lads....I've got a great idea."

I had rented a car for work to drive from Cleveland to Cincinassti. It's a pretty boring drive in a pretty boring car. (some Chrysler product if I remember) Back then there were all sorts of warning placards on the sunvisors. Trying to amuse myself, I dropped the driver's side visor to read the other side and $9 landed in my lap.
I figure that someone before me had to pay a toll, stuffed the change up there and forgot about it.

In the twenty odd years since then, every time I rent a car, I check the visor.

That's funny !

No, it's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve for me.

To quote Jerry Seinfeld " Not that there's anything wrong with it "

Another story for you.

Wife was nagging me about a box of hub caps, " Are you going to ever sell those ? If not toss them "

So I toss them, only to think about it, bothering me, I retrieve them a few hours later.

As an experiment I put them on ebay, 99 cent no reserve. Said if it hits $30 I'll throw in free shipping.

Sold for over $130, 4 BBS center caps off a BMW I had junked. (I'd pulled the caps to get the alloy wheels off at the yard, not sure why I didn't toss them, thought someone might need the caps)

One mans junk is another mans treasure.

Even a pink mini.

Not a garage find or barn find but an old home find.

Replacing the windows upstairs and putting new blinds up, I was carrying the old pull down shades downstairs to throw away when I took pause. (This house was built in 1936.)

Many years ago I was visiting an uncle in Pa and he was hungry and asked if I was too. (I was always hungry at that time)

He put his finger to his lips and shushed me. Pulling down a blind reveiling hidden money. He said "Don't tell your aunt".

Off we went to get something to eat.

So I unrolled the first blind.

Nada

Unroll the second blind.

Much to my surprise a $20 bill minted in 1953 is at the very end/top.

Sometimes the sun shines on a dogs back-side . Thanks uncle for showing me that.

Makes me wonder what else might be hidden ?
