I don't have any races scheduled until possible March so I'm in "cleaning out" and "prep for moving again" mode. Oh, and also "payback to the local community" mode for all of those people I didn't have time to help while I was prepping for upcoming races.

Sounds good I'll shoot you an email and we can set something up.

Thanks for all the info/ideas guys.

With the 998's shorter stroke, flat top pistons will give you around 10:1 compression, and the bigger you make the bore, the more compression you can eek out.  I would go as big as you can with your head, the best small bore head and the one to have.

These Russell .080 pistons would be the best "easy" option... simply bore it and assemble.

If you can do some more work to establish and/or verify pin height and piston to deck clearance, there are even bigger pistons that we 'say' are for the 1098, but will make a nearly 1150 cc engine from a 998... if I remember that's about .130 over bore, gets the bore/stroke ratio much closer to modern designs!

I have an A+ 998 block here that I may try and build and go BIG!....

Read Graham Russell's pieces on the small bore motors (in the Technical section).  He regularly builds 70 hp overbored 998s and 90 hp overbored 1098s...I've been chaufered in his son's with the 998 build up...very impressive.  No rumety rump, no screaming revs, quiet as a mouse.

His information touches on build details, camming, induction and exhaust.  All very useful.

Depends how the bore is if you need to go +

Keep in mind the 1098/998 blocks are the same..... if you want 1098 wou will need to find a crank and get 1098 pistons.  You most economical route would be to rebuil the 998  if no bore is needed

I have a question on my current build project.

CooperTune(Steve) helped me get the cylinder head sorted. I picked up a 12g295 core from Dave at APT and he got it cleaned up and ready for me to build up.

I have all the parts to build up the head I just need to bring it and have the guides installed, springs, rocker, etc.  I'm pretty handy/mechanically inclined and I like spending time in my garage. I successfully resurrected not one but 2 '72 cb100 Honda Motocycles and look at the Mini as being only slightly larger! However I don't think assembling the head properly is in my comfort zone. So I'm going to leave that to someone more knowledgeable in that area. I got all new gaskets and I'm currently refurbishing the Valve/rocker cover, pictures to come of that shortly.

For the rockers I'm going with a stock version for the time being. I keep saying I'm on a budget but that seems to be more of a loose guideline as I move from one section of the build to the next, but I really need to be more mindful of my dollars and the Rocker seems like I can get away with basic for the time being and wouldn't be hard to swap out at a later date.

As far as the block and pistons go I'm a little lost. Currently it's a 998 block with dish top pistons. One of them is blown so it would need to be replaced but I'm going to scrap the remaining good ones and go with Flat Tops. My question is do I leave them at +.00 or do I need to go with a larger bore because of the Head I went with? I'm going to pull the engine to get it cleaned up and gone through so taking it to a shop for Re-boring is not an issue, I have to bring the cylinder head in anyway, may as well do it all in one stop.

So Piston suggestions?

Finally:

When do I need to worry about the Camshaft.
