Steve sorry about that and thank you for the advice, I'm about to run down to Harbor Freight for one then I'll look up your post where you had instructions.

It's an Elgin 003 if it matters, very torquey.  The whole engine is about a year old.

Air, you never replied when I ask if you set up a dial indicator and checked that cam lobe for wear. The side load on that lifter could keep the lifter from turning, if they don't spin they eat cam lodes. Better to know now than later. Steve (CTR)

Thanks for your feedback.Smile

Yes they are the same geometry as Keith Dodds but are not marked so, are just marked `1.5'.
These appear to be some grade of cast iron now, not `forged EN16 steel' as stated in the accompanying leaflet. I noted this when I had to spotface the tops of the previous 2 sets. Machining swarf came off in flakes, not as steel curls.

I am aware that sometimes, these HD rocker shafts have deposits inside from the hardening process. I always degrease them, gurney them then blow them out with air. So far I've not had a problem.

re the shimming, most all factory 1275 rockers had a thin flat washer on the exhaust rockers only. Because the 1275's valve guide spacing was increased over smallbore heads. I fit these washers to the 1.5s, it does not `center the rocker' but it helps.

The valve contact pads are hardened, I cannot file them. I will dress them with some abrasive paper though as they do look a bit rough.

re the cotter pins and spacer springs, these rockers come unassembled, with neither supplied. You need to rob some off another set of rockers. I do fit new cotter pins...

Benefits of these rockers?
I have run a set of the `Keith Dodds' forged ones on my 1360 with a high lift RE282 cam, for over 50,000 miles now. The bushes are still good and the rocker faces not pitted. So I consider them to be durable if made correctly.
My bronze valve guides are not badly worn after 50,000 miles either.Wink

OTOH I have seen many cheap roller tipped rockers have roller wear and pin breakage problems.

Dr Mini for your inspection and approval I submit mine after a little refurbishment.  It's about a year old Dodds 1.5 - maybe I'm blanking out on "MSC".

This is while waiting for a new pushrod, these rockers had been shimmed to favor centering on the valve and one was hitting the side of the head enough to finally bend; the mystery deceleration noise that drove me bonkers for a month.

First discovery was the lovely assortment of fine glass gemstones trapped inside all the bushings.

Both cotter pins snapped off with no more than a threatening glance - just a tiny tweak with the pliers.  Hate to think if my wife had given them one of her looks.  Stainless on there now.

I was able to get much smoother operation by sanding the rough rocker bushing ends where they contact the posts with just an equally rough shim in between.  Not very impressive the way the spacer springs skip around on there because they're sticking/catching on rough surfaces at either end.

Hit the pad faces with 600 > 1000 > 2000 only because it postponed having to work on electrical gremlins.

Lastly I lapped the pushrod cups in to the ball adjusters, and that gives a noticeably smoother movement... not exactly a swiss watch, some of these bits.

I have just assembled another set of the 1.5 `forged' rockers, fresh off the airplane from MSC in UK.

I have to report that my 2 previous gripes with their Quality seem to have been addressed by MSC:
1. The top of the rocker face where the nut sits is now flat, I didn't need to machine it.
2. The adjusters supplied are now straight, unlike 2 previous sets received (which were bent). So I didn't have to replace them with good S/H ones.

Thanks for the Quality improvement, MSC!Cool
