Actually I believe that those 500 do not go fast. Brian(zerobelow) was able to get one pretty easily for his Marcos.

They may have gone fast the first couple of years, but not so much now.

And don't forget that you too can have a properly registered and titled bumper car in California, but not a January 1, 1968 Mini.

malsal. I  heard the late boyd covington would try to get ALL 500 slots when he was alive. I thought getting the chokes  state vin numbers ( NCS ) and bonded titles was tough..  a mere 33 pages of forms.. to be legal here. in NC for kit , custom or antique.. Calli sound even WORSE

So, what are the good folks out there going to do with those 68 - 75 model Minis that were already registered?  Are they going to go on a witch hunt for them as well?  Glad I don't live there!

Is that only for "direct import" cars from overseas or does it apply to cars registered in any of the other states prior to registering in Calif?  Could the car be imported and registered say, in the state where the port is, then trucked across the US and re-registered from the US title in Calif?

I was told it applys to any post 68 car even cars previously registered in another state. Unless it has a EPA DOT compliance plate/sticker it's a no go. as someone pointed out if you can get a letter of compliance from the manufacturer then it will go but since a mini was never compliant after 68 thats not going to happen for us.......................

Hi Minimans,  Thanks for that.  Did they point you to a piece of legislation or regulation that described this post 68 limitation?   I'd like to put together an updated article for the forum with all the info I'm gathering and that is an important piece of this.  -M

I believe what you'll find is you can import it, you may even be able to get a CA title, but it could prove problematic atually getting a clear registration on it. If you are just going to work on it/restore it, there's no need to get registration, right?

Hey Forum,  I'm looking for someone who has recently imported a pre 1975 modified mini into California.  Does that person exist?   I relocated to the US in the 90's and I have an old 1974, 1380cc Mini that was heavilly modified for road rallies stored back in the UK.  This car is serious fun on an English country lane.

I would like to import this Classic Mini into California as a restoration project and I'm trying to figure out what is real and what are rumors around issues with CBP, EPA, DOT, and Cal Air Resources Board.  I'm hearing there are issues to face with all of them to import and register a classic Mini.

Any real world experience and information that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

M
