And if you go that route make sure you go through them thoroughly before installing them. A lot of issues that people have is by installing a set of twin carbs they know nothing about and throttle shaft wear is an issue with twins which creates all sorts of inconsistencies with the running of the car. Twin carb owners biggest complaints are "they always need adjusting" a well sorted re built set of twins will stay in tune for a long while not to mention the "bling" factor.

Keep in mind....the 1275 S got basically the same twins as the 998/997 Cooper. It's all in the needle choice. If you find a set of twins...make sure you have the right needles.

Well...it seems a single HIF38 or twin HS2s seems to be the about right area for a sort of done up 998cc. ...so guess I will enjoy the one I have a bit more till the budget moves in that direction ....since it seems it will not add too much more in performance with what i already have on there. Twin is tempting...

The twin 1.25's help in the lower to mid range where a lot of normal day to day driving occurs.

I have a similar set-up as Alex. I tried a HIF44, but it drove much better with a HIF38 ( I believe I have a AAU needle ).
I did use twin HS2 carbs on the engine when I autocrossed it. This set-up gave a quicker response low down.....but the 38 is much better overall.
HIF44 is too big.

The 998 in Betty is at +.080 with a bigger valve ported 12G295 and an MG Metro cam. She went better and drove nicer with an HIF38 compared to the HIF44 I have fitted at the moment.
I therefore conclude that an HIF44 is too big, and talking with KC yesterday (who did the head for me) he concurs.
From experience on a different car, twin HS2s (1-1/4") are nicer to drive with than a singe HIF38.

Just me and for the sake of, you can't go wrong with twin 1 1/4 SU set up. Sized just right for what you are doing. Get correct angle manifold and carbs a Cooper air cleaner with K&N elements. One of those cooper style exhaust and let it go. Nice and quiet sized well and easy to adjust. Will cover 95 % of anything you can do to a 998. Steve (CTR)
The mild 1275s work well with them as well. I'm running single HIF44 on my 1360.

I agree with Cheleker 1 3/4" (HS6, HIF6, HIF44) is way too much carb for a slightly warmed up 998. The smaller carbs might lose out some at the top end but will give better part throttle results (torque) because the air/fuel miture has higher speed. Choice 3.5 might be twin HS4s/HIF38.

First choice, the HS4 you already have. Second choice, HIF38. Third choice, dual HS2s. Fourth choice, HIF44. One hundreth choice, dual barrel Webber.

I went +60 as well on my 998.... Used a VP-7 cam instead (SW5 didn't exist then).... I have the HIF44, with a ported 12G295 head... breaths nicely and pulls well.
(at least it did 6 years ago when it was on the road last!! :-)

Personnally, I'd go with an HIF44 / HIF6.

I have a standard single carb on my newly rebuilt 998cc engine. I had it bored +60 and installed a sw5-07 camshaft as well. I also put on the stage 1 kit from mini spares. I was wondering if a twin hs2 carb or dual barrel webber would be benifical. I am still a bit new at this and want to see what others think ...
