Thanks all for the reply/info.

I installed the old speedo cable, drill in reverse, turned on slowly then faster and the odometer turns but not the speedometer needle.  It appears, if I am reading correctly, apparently the reply from Inno, has had some experiance with the internal plastic drive or spacer.  I will remove the speedo from the car and check further and if no luck will send out to APT in MN as I think they do pretty good work at a some what reasonable cost.

Thanks

Tim

I have had many mini speedometers apart. Remove your unit and send it to Nissonger or Hollywood Speedometer and have it properly refurbished.

There is no easily replaced item as has been described in a recent post. I always suggest people dismantle 90 mph mini speedometers, but a real S item should just get fixed properly.

If the odometer is working but the analog needle is not moving the problem is most likely in the gauge, not the cable.

The Mini speedo cable is a simple, single cable which mechanically drives a pair of magnetic arms inside the speedometer.  That pair of magnet arms is on a shaft with a worm gear that drives the odometer pinion.  So... if the odometer is working, the input to the speedometer is working.

You can test the speedometer as mentioned above.  Take a nail and shape its tip into a square that will fit the cable entrance on the speedometer.  Chuck the nail in an electric drill and set the drill for reverse.  Operate the drill at low speed and you should see the odometer work.  Increase the drill speed slowly up to about 1000 RPM.  If the analog needle still doesn't move you either need to have the gauge professionally restored or decide if you want to undertake the repair yourself.

Its been a while since I did this, but remember a similar prob with my Inno.  If you still have the old insert, see if you can get some teflon or such and have a new one made.  If I remember right both the inside and outside are squared off.  I belive this piece was used to keep from screwing up your gage if cable screwed up. Idea would be the softer plastic piece would round off without screwing up the gage.

I don't have the info but you can check the gage with a drill, but u need to be careful about drill speed. Maybe someone can chime in.

The other issue is odometer works but not spedometer. Gears in gage could be bad. I would check gage with drill first though with proper gaps taken up.

Ignorence is bliss til someone says you are wrong.

Hello

I have a 1965 Austin Cooper S with the 120 MPH speedo.

My speedometer seems to have a problem.  I purchased a new cable and installed it, which was no problem since I had the radiator out of the car.  The speedo does not work.  The needle does not move.  Not even a little bit.  Now the funny thing is the odometer does work!  This confuses me terribly.

A friend stated that some speedometers have an inside drive cable in adition to an outside drive lug.  I seem to remember when I removed the old speedo cable there was a small plastic bushing of sort, with the outside of the bushing kind of square like it was driving something, on the end of the cable sheath.  This bushing was way past worn out.  I felt if this bushing was needed, the new cable would come with one.  It did not.

Any thoughts?  Comments etc on a fix or maybe I did something wrong, would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

PS  I still can't find where the spell check button is!  Jeezzz Lueeez
