love the shift points on the speedo. 3rd gear at 64mph! Screamin!
I've got a 997 but can get to it till the snow melts.

Nice. Just what the guy needs. Refurbish by Nissonger, Speedy Cables, etc. and fit a converter gearbox in the cable if the S gearbox has a 3.44 final drive.

It is hard to tell if correct would be preferred, or if accurate and OK are the way to go. It would be nice to know the final drive of the transmission, and then maybe we could recomend an actual Cooper 100 mph speedo. The important part, again, is the TPM number, it is in small print on the inside circle of the speedo. 1408 and 1376 are probably there.

I think I have a 997 or 998 speedo at the shop I'll take a look when I get there. Anybody know the SN Number for the correct speedo?

I may have the parts to re assemble a 1280 tpm mini 1000 speedo with the 997 Cooper sweep and the more common Austin needle. The odometer would be right, till it seizes, and the speedo would be as close as needed. This would cost a bit, and then add another $200 to send it to one of the speedo rebuilders to go through it. I regularly go through mini speedos for my own use, but for someone else I would arrange the bits and let a pro do the final work.

If you are going to run the Cooper-S gearbox, check its final drive ratio. If it is still 3.44 as Mur said, and you are running the 10" tires as you said, then the speedometer you have will work. As mentioned the reference to "1280 revs" is known as the "Turns Per Mile" or TPM number. It's the number of speedometer cable revolutions per mile of travel. 1280 is correct for a car with the 3.44 final drive and 10" rims.

My car is an Austin. I have the original tranny, but the layshaft was bad, so I have installed a tranny from a 1275 Cooper S. The speedo needle is different from an Austin and a Morris???? I have been looking for a speedo for nearly a year with no luck and want to get the car on the road by April, so you can see why I am a bit anxious.
Thanks for getting back to me on this.

1280 TPM is for a 3.44 final drive, not a 997 item.
A real Cooper speedo will come up, so don't despair, and certainly don't put the wrong stuff in there.
Also, while having the correct speedometer will be very nice, having the original correct final drive would not be a priority, especially if you are running a 997. Are you using the original transmission still?
Is your car a Morris or an Austin? This would effect the needle choice if a person were to assemble a speedometer from parts.

I am looking at purchasing a speedo for the 1963 997 Cooper that I am currently restoring. The speedo that is for sale has "1280 Revs" on a label on the back. I am not sure how that relates to my gearbox (it is stock) and how that would translate to a correct speed for my car. I am using stock 10" wheels.
I think this is out of a newer car, but I have virtually given up hope of finding the correct "100 MPH" type speedo that the 997's used, and am hoping I can make it work.
Any advice on the suitability of this speedo for my car would be appreciated.
