I do know that 95% of all Harleys made are still on the road...the other 5% were already Picked up by the tow truck. Maybe this would work as a formula for Minis? Whatcha think? As far as Algorhythm goes...he's probebly too busy jetting around the world warning us about global warming to be bothered counting Minis.Tongue Out

I see your cow licks...and raise you the eternal question..."How many Angels can dance on the head of a pin?" That question occupied many years of discussion in the past, around 1667, for example..............your link is here..

The 5000 figure has to be way low if you ask me.  There must be at least 15,000 to 20,000 classic Minis in North America alone, if not more.  Think about it,  Don runs a pretty healthy business with several employees.  Likewise, there is Seven Enterprises with several employees, and Mini CIty as well.  All three of these companies have a minimum of 4 to 6 full time employees.  In addition to these big 3 companies, there are at least 4 or 5 smaller Mini parts places in the US that sell parts.  Do you think selling parts to owners of 5,000 cars can generate enough profit to sustain these businesses with all those employees?  I don't think so.  Here in East TN I can count over 100 Classic Minis, and we aren't the largest city in TN either.  Most of my friends in clubs throughout the US that own Minis have at least 2 cars, and I'd say the average Classic Mini owner has about 4.  No, 5,000 is way too low.

Yep...here in BC a goodly number of Longbridge's Best tour our streets. Better weather, less salt = longer lasting Minis...+ access to the JDM models in great shape and very reasonable cost. There are 3 here in the small city where i live, and I have seen more down Island. Victoria Minis' club probably has 42 plus cars and other non-member cars get seen. Vancouver Mini club has ???? and they are a much bigger club.

There are probably 10-20 Minis in NB, 4 or 5 in PEI, and I'll guess another 25 in NS....perhaps 5-10 in NF & LB....so east of Quebec perhaps 60+......now, that being said, you cannot from those number extrapolate anything about Quebec.  Beside BC, they seem to have HUGE numbers. Well into the hundreds.  Ontario also has many, as does BC , however other provinces and territories the number seem to be way down.

Several factors come to mind.  Original BMC dealers, rust (salt on roads in the winter), resident population and weather.  There are probably more Minis in Vancouver than in all of Canada East of Quebec.

I am sure there are pockets of Minis in the USA (Fla, CT/MA, CA, OR/WA, Texas) as well. (for various similar reasons)

There might be several ways of estimating how many Minis there are in the US.  DMV records from several representative counties could be tallied then multiplied by the total number of counties in the US.  If that info is not available, then what if each individual here was to calculate how many Minis are in his or her county, then add an unknown variable to represent how many Minis there are that are not known, (a statistical calculation of sorts that were have to be empirically pre-determined).  Here in my small county in Wisconsin of 20,000 people, there are currently 2 known Minis.  Perhaps we could build upon this database.  I may speak with a math prof friend.

I doubt MM would have any more idea than the next guy.

I'll bet MM has a pretty good idea how many minis there are. If I were a retailer I'd want to know how big my market is. And I'd be very interested in any trends; going up (investment time), stable (stay the course), going down (time to make retirement plans). And remember, Spitz said "they ain't talkin." Not knowing and not talking are two different things. I'll locate the threads Spitz was referring to, to read for myself what was actually said, but I think it's reasonable for MM to remain silent about any numbers they may have.

Minibitz: Your right about finding a suitable search string for for anything Mini. I run into that all the time when searching Craig's List. Too many possibilities.

Mine is listed as a Moris on my registration card.

As a matter of fact, there are a lot of Minis in Iowa.  I know of several, running or not.  Iowa is state with a population of 3,000,000, I would venture to guess that there are more Minis per capita than most states.

It's hard to get figures through official sources due to the amount of other vehicles with the word "mini" somewhere in the name. An associate here in NZ tried it with our system and even searching within a sensible age range to narrow the numbers still pulled up many non realated vehicles.

I doubt MM would have any more idea than the next guy. It's not like you all use them, or notify them if you have more than one car or indeed if you leave the scene. Going on personal experience in my shop all you really know are the customers that are currently using your services, personal contacts and cars that show up for sale on various forums and websites. Probably at least another 10 cars still around for every 1 we know about.

From what I've seen even the UK site is pretty inacurrate as it only deals with cars that have been kept on the system, not all the other vehicles in garages, sheds, barns etc that are constantly being dug out a resurected.

My insurance sent me a card for an "Austin Healy" When I called to correct it, they sent me one for an "Aston Martin"

I seriously thought about having a car-b-que in the back yard and telling 'em they missed a decimal point on the value. [rolleyes]

As far as the 5,000-ish figure goes, that's a reasonable guess. For just the USA, you would need to average 100 Minis in each state. Yes, I know that the Republic of Kalifornia has more than that but how many do you suppose there are in Iowa?
