Yea, the 4-way hazard switch very often is the problem when direction indicators refues to work. Because it´s rarely used, the switch contacts inside oxydize. It sometimes "helps", if you switch it on/off several times but, will only be a temporary "cure".

This was a problem on all carburettor Minis with 4-way rocker switch, up to including the early SPi (small fuse box).

On the carb Minis, they used 2 separate bi-metal flasher units (tin cans) that can only work with either 2x21W or 4x21W bulbs. The "blink frequency" is depending on the current flow. Therefor it was necessary to "isolate" either circuit. When hazard is selected, direction indicators are isolated. If it would be possible, to select them both at the same time, it would give you a funny "blink frequency" Surprised

From the SPi on, they introduced a single electronic flasher unit that can work with both, 2x21W and 4x21W bulbs, so no more need to isolate the circuits. However, they also introduced a 2nd, auxiliary relay to allow the direction indicators to only work, when ignition is switched on. On the early SPis, the 4-way hazard switch was still wired the same as on the carb models. So it still can and will be the main suspect item when there are problems.

From late `93 on (SPi with large 24 fuse box), they also changed the wiring of the 4-way hazard switch. It now only connects LH and RH indicator light circuits in parallel and does not isolate the direction indicators any more. The axiliary realy remained unchanged until end of production. If you select hazard warning lights and also direction indicators LH or RH (ignition on) at the same time, it would still have normal hazard warning indication as the single flasher unit doesn´t care... Wink

Btw, it´s very easy to replace the "tin can" flasher units with 2 separate electronic flasher units. Only an additional earth wire needed for each unit. This makes slow "blinkers" because of bad contacts a thing of the past. Plus the advantage to have a double blink frequency for the direction indicators, if a single bulb fails Cool

Cheers, Diddi

No need to apologize...Wink

To help a little bit to indentify your car:

If the car was built to compete in the Mighty Mini Series, it must be a SPi as the Mighty Mini Series is a SPi-only racing series. With the 24 Fuse block in the engine bay, the wiring harness will be of a "late" SPi (authumn `93 to authumn `96) so `95 of the wiper motor also fits this.

Production dates (week/year) are also found on the boot lock Wink

Regarding the engine: The Metro was built until late `90 with the 1275 A+ Series engine. Thereafter the Metro was continued as "Rover 100" with the K-Series engine.

So a `97 Metro engine will not be possible if it´s an A+ engine.

However, it´s entirely possible, that a late Metro 1275 A+ engine (maybe `87?) was bored to 1340cc, converted to SPi and used for your car. The block is entirely the same...

I apologize for being so confused on the description.   I have owned this vehicle for quite a few years and get surprised everytime I work on it.   Probably because I still dont understand the differences within the years of manufacture.  This care was put together in England for what appears to be part of the Mighty Mini racing series but never saw the track.   I has been assembled with a lot of parts which are sometimes difficult to put a finger on the origin.   The car is great but by the wiper motor identifiation it is a 95 body.   The engine is a 97 metro 1275 boared out to around 1345 with what I was told on purchase.   However, the car has a 66 vin number and thru the learning process I found the only thin 1966 was the vin number.   Thru help from all on this forum, I have learned a lot over the years but still learning.   At least I have kept the parts suppliers in business thru the learning process.Sealed

Thanks again to everyone for adding info to this post.

I Think, your description "I have what I believe to be a 95 body and 97 engine configuration.   I have the 24 fusse box." was a little bit misleading...

A `95 car (SPi) has a 24 fuse block in the engine bay and a `97car (MPi) has a 24 fuse block in the cabin, on the R/H side underneath the instrument panel...

But wiring wise, they are about the same except for the stalk switches.

Thanks to everyone that replied with helpful information. I finally have turn signals. Without all the agonizing detail here is a quick overview. first replaced the flasher switch from autozone with no results. Took the assembly on the stalk apart and all checked out ok, still no blinkers.  Ordered a new flasher switch, still no blinkers.  ulled the dash and tested all the wiring and couldn't  find any problems?!?!  Received the last post to check the relays and they were all ok. I thought, what the hell, put the original blinker switch in and ?? I have turn signals!  Apparently the three prong blinker from auto zone is not standard for the mini??.  Looks like the problem was the hazard switch but having the autozone flasher installed just created additional problems for me.  One thing's for sure, I know where every wire is located in this car now. Also, this car does not have an in cockpit fuse block.  All I have is the 24 fuse block.  Thanks again to everyone for the assistance.

Do the indicators (all 4) work when the hazard switch is selected on?

If yes, the fuse and also the hazard/direction indicator flasher unit is OK.

There is another relay in the engine bay. RH side, close to the wiper motor. There should be 2-3 relays/sockets mounted to the inner wing, underneath the wing mounting lip. The rearmost is for direction indicators.

This relay de-activates the turn signals if the ignition key is off. The relay socket suffers from oxydation and sometimes even the wires break off the terminals.

Wire colors in the socket are: green (ignition feed, fuse box C6), light green/pink (from flasher unit), light green brown (to direction indicator switch) and black (earth).

Check all 4 terminals in the relay socket for good condition and renew as necessary. Check for 12V between green and black. Replace relay...

You can use a standard automotive relay but probably will require to check and probably also change positions of the wires in the socket. Otherwise buy a "yellow" relay from MM: //www.minimania.com/part/YWB10012/Relay---Multiple-Use-oenon-Returnable

I show power at the stem.   Good ground could be an issue.  I have not tried to trace the grounds, I can do that this weekend.   I have a haynes manuel and still trying to determine which electrical diagram to use.   I have tried the post 95 SPI and it seems to come close.   Since I am such an electrical lame brain, how do I check for a good ground?

I need help on a problem with indicator lights.   I have what I believe to be a 95 body and 97 engine configuration.   I have the 24 fusse box.   I have replaced the emergency light switch and the indicator flasher and checked the fuses.  I cannot find any inline fuses on this car.   I still have no indicator lights.  I have pulled the indicator switch from the stem and disassembled, cleaned and replaced, still no lights.   I have puta wire in the harness on the right rear indicator and checked continuity all  the way back to the green/white wire on the stem switch.   However, when I check this continuity with the indicator lever in the right or left turn position I get continuity on the creen/white , green/red and green wire at the switch on the stem.   I am a real electrical idiot so am looking for any help possible.   I have read every forum available on the web and still no resolution.   Thanks for any help.
