Well it still confounds me but the Aussie Mini Window Van does not leak oil...at all...after nearly 35,000 miles since the seller replaced all the seals and some strenuous driving around Australia and to/from Ohio/Wisconsin here in North America.
Now, I am really challenged to see if I can replicate Andrew's careful work when I mount a 1293 on top of the rebuilt Aussie 4-synchro tranny. Anyone want to bet it will leak?

I'm glad Spitz came in first with a classy reponse. I was thinking up something between the Exxon Valdez and Fonzie's hair.

Ha ha, too funny Spitz! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I hope this theme continues in the sense that I still place my bid.

No cause for alarm really.
Oil leaks on MINIs are common place.
One of the most common would be the seal at the diff where the rod change enters. Easily fixed!
This is a likely spot for a low km Japanese car.
Another possible leak is from the valve cover....it'll leak down the block, possibly in different areas.
Diff seals are another common area.
Don't let this stop you from buying one....MINIs often "mark their spot".....but usually an easy fix
Edit: I'm guessing it's a manual gearbox as you said "Cooper"....but, if the car has automatic....walk away

For the second time in a month, Ive found a car I want to bid on at a Japanese auction. Its a one-owner 94 Cooper with 50,000 km. Its auction inspection sheets states "oil leaks". This comment was also on a 97 Cooper with 90,000km.
Questions:
1) Is this engine known to leak oil?
2) If so, where are the common areas (i.e. head gasket, pan, etc.)?
3) Should you generally avoid a leaking oil Cooper? Are there some leak areas better to have than others? Are they relativey inexpensive to fix?
4) Would you buy a Cooper that has oil leaks?
Any info would be much appreciated! Auction goes in 36 hours ...
