Although i like the closed end brake adjusting wrench better i also like the open ended one for front adjusters behind the steering arm where space is tight.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Don't make the rears bigger.

I eventually went to an adjustable proportioning valve.

Any advantage to swich the rear 5/8 to 3/4 brake cylinders?

I would like to think no in a Moke, specially since it's so light in the rear, they probably would tend to lock all the time.

Toughts?

I bet you were waiting for that Spitz.

I have a set of Cosmics I want to get fixed and use on the Moke from time to time. Those already stick out about an inch, so disks are a no go.

However first I need to get the rims fixed and buy new tires, those Dunlops are so old and hard, I removed all the air from a tire in the back, but it look like it was full of air.

I'd get the more expensive wrench.

I told you you'd get the disc brake "suggestion"...lol

You're right....discs will push your wheels out about an inch.....so you would also have to get spacered drums for the rear ( or just spacers ) and longer studs.  You may then want to get wheels with a more positive off-set.

Twin leading (leaking..lol chuck) can work great.  You're not going to be racing this thing right?

Don't get me wrong....the discs are fantastic!  I've put them on my 77 , stopping power is great

Ok, there's more parts than I expected and good thing I asked as I had no idea about the adjust screws being part of the backplate.

I see no need for disks in the Moke and I want to keep it as original as possible.  Don't the disks pusk the front wheels outwards?

So basically I need to buy these:

And the most important piece!

Or

WHich brake adjuster tool should I take?

Am I missing something?

Miguel

When a major service is needed for drum brakes, it REALLY is the time to switch to disks!  Many of the items and the $$ for them will also be part of the disk brakes cost.  I installed the Cooper S 7.5 disk on my Moke project a year or two ago, and the difference and confidence level is like night and day! Think of it this way.... the cost for disk brakes is brought way down if you consider it to be the portion over the cost of a major drum brake service!

The twin-leading system has a hard brake pipe connecting the two cylinders on each wheel. They will probably break when disassembling - most likely rusted onto the fittings.

Similarly there's a hard pipe on the trailing arm that will probably break. (I write from personal experience!)

While we're talking pipes and hoses, guys who know: advise Miguel on the correct fittings he will need. Also the proper flaring to be used wiht the fittings.

Gaskets for between the wheel cylinders and the backing plates.

Make sure you get the right sized wheel cylinders for the front as well as rear. There's more than one size for twin-leaking [no, I spelled that correctly] shoes.

When you get the Moke back, unless those working on it know Minis, pull the drums and make sure they installed the shoes and springs correctly. It's seldom done correctly.

The front adjusters are an integral part of the backplate.
If they are rounded off the best thing to do is change the backplate, failing that, you can sometimes weld a nut onto the rounded bit.
Rear adjusters just screw out and the repair kits come with new wedges.

Drums can be checked for roundness and skimmed if needed.  I would suggest doing that first as I've had some issues with new drums.

While it's a part and leaking fluid, I'd be tempted to change all four flexi hoses.

I'm sure you'll get responses saying to switch to discs while you're at it....but I think twin leading work great when properly maintained....which it sounds like you're doing.
( you need shoes...not pads btw

Get new springs for sure  and, and for the front

As you've got twin leading already....your older MOKE has obviously been updated already ( originaly single leading?)....so your rear cylinders were probably changed also.... I would guess 1102 but you should measure.

Now would be the time to replace your brake hoses also!

Check/replace the rear adjusters ( I'd get them to put anti sieze on the adjuster threads )

ummmm....

My Moke is 50 years old and its in need of some brakes overhaul.

So, I want to change, all old and tired components, but since I am taking it to a garage, I need to have all required parts in hand.

My Moke has 4 drums, twin leading shoes in front.

SO I need:

4 Drums

Brake pads, front and back

4 Front slave cylinders

2 Rear Slaves (which ones?)

Change the adjust screws as they are rounded (do i need the wedges too?)

In your experience, returns springs? which ones?

Anything else I that may be worth changing at this point?

Any advice will be trully appreciated.

Thanks!

Miguel
