Talked to my wife about radiator swapping.  She is not quite comfortable with it yet but I'm ready to go.

I have a few good used rads for Canadian Minis with Air Pump...no need to fuss as you can continue to use that style.

When I went up to 1380 I had an earlier 998 rad recored with more efficient guts.  However, the cost of materials and labour may make a new rad attractive price wise.

Spitz, thanks for looking.  I changed my profile to include my email.  I wonder if the top spout on a "common" Mini radiator could be simply moved to the back?  Seems like everything else would be the same. Thanks.

Bill....you have no email in your profile...

I went and talked to the fella.  He remembers the rad and went looking for it.  Came back about 8 mins later without it.
He can't find it right now.  He has my name and number, and I left him a MINI rad for reference.  Send me an email so we can converse off the board.

Spitz, next time you're in the vacinity of that rad shop, could you stop in and ask if that NOS radiator is still available? I just had mine recently removed and the side brackets re-soldered, flushed, and tested but it might be nice to have a spare. Thanks.

I have seen the same or similar set up as yours in some of the Australian Mokes also.

Not sure why the worry...

If you ever need a new rad....simply order a regular rad and order a thermostat housing as well.

A local rad shop happens to have a NOS rad for later Canadian car like yours...( this was a few years ago...but I don't think it's been purchased )

IF it ever comes time to replace the radiator, what are my options?  If I can't find a Canadian spec replacement radiator (or have this one rebuilt), what parts do I need to install a "standard" radiator?  I'm thinking it might include: a) the radiator core, b) the top radiator 3-bolt mounting bracket, c) the thermostat housing & gasket, and maybe both upper and lower radiator hoses.

Any suggestions or comments?

It should convert over easily with the parts you listed just make sure you have the correct upper radiator bracket as they do come in different sizes and configurations. At the same time if it has not already been done i would replace the by pass hose and water pump it would also be a good time to check the motor mount while you have the radiator out.

Canadian Minis

As the '70s went on, the Canadian Minis varied more and more from their UK market brethren. Fuel tank mountings changed. The fuel filler neck was modified and fuel tank caps from other markets would no longer fit. Huge side marker lights/reflectors were added. The front turn signal lights increased in size beyond anything ever offered elsewhere. Latches to hold the front seats in place were introduced on the Canadian Minis long before they were used in England. Dash panel arrangements and switches varied and even seat belt warning buzzers were incorporated. Bumpers were raised and an early form of smog control by using an air pump and injector ports in the head was added. The location of the smog pump also necessitated a change in the radiator so that the inlet was towards the back near the filler cap. If you have a Canadian spec. Mini, especially one from the later 1970s, be aware of these differences, and compare your car with others. You’ll find even more!

for what it's worth..???

Willie, I bought the car much as it is so I can't take much credit for the engine bay except a bit of clean up here and there. Any experience with Canadian spec Minis and their "backwards" radiators?
