Please state which Dealership it is or was to protect the rest of us as well. Thanks.                   Mini Estate

Wow!  I would report them to MINI USA (irregardless if they are a legitimate MINI dealer) & your states Better Business Bureau.

Just curious, was this a legitimate MINI Dealership??? Slipping you a demo as "new" is beyond shady!!! So you were able to return the MINI for a full refund? That's great if that's the case. May I make a suggestion if you are still interested in owning a newer BMW MINI. Find yourself a 2004-2006 Mini Cooper 'S' in excellent condition with low miles, (50K or less). You can pick one up for probably $10K or less and still have as much fun as a kid in a candy store and then some! Just saying.  Mini Estate

so the sound is definitely not what I would say normal, because its not always there, but when it is, its extremely audible. I havent heard it yesterday when I drove to work but im still worried.

it was audible enough to get picked up by my phone, but when its not audible my car is super silent. In idle I revved my engine and as soon as I go past 100 rpm or so the helicopter noise is gone.

Going to the dealer today and try to return/exchange as I found out they sold me a demo as new, and my warranty is already been used up.

update: just processed my refund, hopefully all is good, dealer was shady as ****, but I got my refund, long as everything is okay....

I drove about 100 miles from the lot to my house, when I parked in my parking lot, I heard a weird sound as if there is a small helicopter in my backseat, I know thats a terrible description but I don't know how else to describe it. First thing that I thought was maybe something in my trunk is sitting against some pole or something.

I looked in my backseat and noticed some screw just sitting there, I will get pics soon. Before signing the contract I mentioned there was some water under the car and no other car in the lot, and it was a sunny day so it was weird that it hasn't evaporated. I asked them to inspect it and it was all A-OKAY, but what if that screw came from some inspection and now something is loose?

I test drove it before purchasing and my dad was in the back, no sound. I only heard the sound after an hour drive and when I got home.

just looking for some reassurance, again I will post pics soon, I want to read through my owners manual and take the car for a run and see if I hear the noise again.

EDIT: so I noticed my left window makes a sound as if its rubbing against rubber when the road is bumpy.....the right door is also rattling like crazy(I read this might be a seatbelt issue so ill check later)......and I tried locating the source of the helicopter sound and it really sounds like its coming from under the back right side of my car, maybe near the wheel or something. As soon as I hit idle after driving in the free way for 20 min, I can hear the rattle. As soon as I start accelerating it is gone, and as soon as I kill the engine the sound is gone.

I agree - you paid big $$ to the dealer for satisfaction - get it.

I listened to the cell phone recording and the youtube posting. (Yes, very faint!)As you move your phone around, it seemed to get a little louder as you moved it towards the middle of the windshield. Sometimes (usually because of the way our heads are made) sounds seem to come from other than where they really are coming from. (Your Dad may not have heard anything because his ears are getting old!)

To me it sounds like somewhat normal engine noises that occur at idle. We humans hear dfferently when sitting still admiring our new car and when the brain is busier managing a moving vehicle. If in park, and you raise the idle just a wee bit - in 200rpm increments, does the sound change - get louder or faster - or go away?

Sometimes, cars have parts that vibrate at certain resonant frequencies generated by the engine. Car makers try to engineer these things out, but if one fastener is missing or a part isn't properly aligned it can happen. My daily driver car (not a MINI) has a harmonic in drive on idle (e.g. at a stop light) that causes the driver's and passenger's seats to vibrate like a vibrating lounge chair. We don't hear it but we do feel it, and it is annoying. Your problem could be as simple as a wire touching somewhere and it vibrates only at idle.

Do another recording, at idle, using your phone as a sound detector. Use a "selfie stick" if you have one, so you can sit still in the driver's seat. Movie your phone back and forth along the dash, then along the sides of the cabin and down the middle towards the back - in a grid pattern to determine whee the sound seems loudest or less muffled by the interior. Do another pass down below the dash on each side of the console. When you play back you should be able to hear where it is loudest and clearest

Aloha,

Make sure you are completely satisfied that everything is to your liking with your new MINI! Shootz brah! That's a brand new car. You shouldn't be going through anything like this! I would drop it back off to the Dealer myself, until all the issues have been taken care of. Be specific. Be serious as well that you are NOT happy, (if you are not!) Customer satisfaction is what it's all about. You don't want to start out with even the slightest problem. If it were an older MINI, I might think your "rattle" would be caused by the rear hatch latch needing grease!!! Sounds crazy I know, but almost impossible to locate if you don't have a clue where to look. Like I said though, not likely the cause being a brand new car? Hope all turns out well for you. It's just sad to hear about folks having issues like this before they even get out of the gate!

Since you have a brand new car - have your dealer look at it again!

As for the symptoms, this is not something we have seen or have any reports of....
