I have three cyl blocks on engine stands today. Two A+ 1293s and a .060 O/S 998. The 1293s get verto parts with a new light steel flywheel and clutch parts. The other end get two part Cooper S balancer. Everything is balanced, rods recond and side clearanced. Pre assembled piston to deck checked and block surfaced to zero deck. Head workked and chambers CCed and head surfaced to get CR I'm after. Yes the 850 Moke resto unit and the 998 cost just as much to build as the 1293s. I don't make up the numbers I just work with them.
Nothing but respect for Don, wonder why could not match tappet covers. Steve (CTR)

One of the key components of this engine is: "Built by Don Sobering".
Sobering knows attention to detail.
I would take a well built 998 over a so so built 1275 or 1380 any day.

That looks like a nice engine...
Good luck with the sale.
That MOD green engine is just plain wierd... Why, why, why... I just don't understand... Moke perhaps?
It's been fun, but this place is done. I have no hatred, and appreciate the good times. But this place now belongs to Tony and his pink mini.

Having built a few engines recently (and three about to go to the machine shop) you don't get much change out of £2000-2500 to do a full rebuild and upgrade on a 1275.
A 998 is pretty much exactly the same cost for less power but more thrashability.
I don't doubt that this engine has a similar if not greater cost involved, as my shipping is considerably lower, so there is probably $6-7000 in it in parts & machining I'd guess.
Having said that, it's a bit of a halfway house engine.
Not good enough for concours or show quality as it's the 'wrong colour' and has aftermarket twinkly fittings, but not a real screamer of a fast road motor either.
The price wil undoubtedly deter many potential buyers, mainly because of things like this: //www.minimania.com/part/U-POWERUNIT/Used-1275-A-plus-Core-Motor-Engine-Trans--Mini--Cooper and this: //www.minimania.com/part/1380_POWERUNIT/Classic-Mini-1380-Engine--Transmission-Powerunit--Complete
A professionally rebuilt 1380 with warranty for less money is almost always going to be more appealing.
Me, I like big 998s & 1098s, but most don't.

The spec sheet on it looks great, and not saying it isn't worth that, but I think you'll have a hard time marketting a 998 for $8500. Seems like most folks in the US want the big 1275 or nothing at all. My son loved his car with a 998 in it. Said you can have just as much fun and get into just as much trouble in a 998 Mini as you can with a 1275, and won't break nearly as easy. Anyway, good luck on the sale.
I guess it all depends if you are looking for a high quality build or not. I am in no real hurry to sell, and if it does not
sell I may end up using it in a future project.
BTW $8500.00 CAD = $6800.00 USD at today's exchange rate
