posted on mini forum uk, but figured I would ask here as well

I am running an 1988 MG Metro 1275 A+ in my 75 Mini. My question is regarding the valve clearance, and cam timing.

I have read that valve clearance of 17 and 14 thou was set to help with emissions at idle, because the MG metro was pulling vacuum advance from manifold vacuum, not ported like other A series. The rough idle caused by the lumpy cam + intake pulse, was fixed by setting the valve clearance to essentially reduce the overlap of the cam.

I am running a HS4 carb with the vacuum advance attached to the ported vacuum on the side of the carb, and I do not have a run on valve.

Not being concerned with emissions, I am wondering from those with first had experience what the best performance setup for these engines are.

What valve clearance (intake and exhaust)?

What base and max advance timing?

Ported or manifold vacuum?

Thanks
