I'd guess the drive nut has fallen off due to a missing split pin, the CV has backed out of the hub and only the disc trapped in the caliper is holding the wheel on.

I'm sure you don't have a 1995 car in California, as that would be totally and utterly illegal... unlike the rest of the USA where it is just illegal.

I don't seem to be able to view the for sale ad.  Try to post a picture or two of the car, the wheel and driveshaft also.

If you are not able to diagnose this, you probably should take the car to a professional.

And, since youre in Kalifornia, I'm sure the year of the Mini is actually 1965 since registering anything newer than 1975 is impossible in the state....

You may have several issues that may or may not be connected to the failure.

  • No drive and no leak and noise may suggest that perhaps the pinion/final drive may have an issue. That's an internal issue and a pricey repair.

These are external issues but still involve new bits and likely a healthy repair bill:

  • A wheel that "moves in and out" without a leak might suggest a loose or missing castle nut.  That's the big nut the that attaches the drive flange to the drive axle and can be seen in the big center hole of the wheel. Scary thought.
  • A wheel that can be "rocked" back and forth suggests a wheel bearing issue. Worn bearings will cause a castle nut to loosen, but if a cotter key is in place, the nut should be there but be loose and you should not lose drive.

first thing that comes to mind is a driveshaft failure? wheel bearings wouldn't stop the car but would have been making noise before failure.

Where are you located? somebody nearby with mini experience would probably be able to diagnose this in a few minutes if they could look at the car?

Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

I was traveling up the 5North at 65 miles an hour when suddenly I heard a "clink clink" noise. The car slowly came to a stop with the engine still on and the car in neutral, I tried to step on the gas in 1st gear but the car would not go. It almost seemed like the hand break was on. Note that the car was not leaking any fluids or overheating. The towing co. took the car down to the house where I tried to find the problem. What I found was a very loose front Left wheel which I could move towards and away from me with out a problem. I have been doing some research and it seems that the wheel bearings are at fault. At this point the car is impossible to push its like a heavy tank.

The car was recently purchased from mini mania and it can be seen in the social link for sale priced at 10,000. it is a 1995 1275cc sedan mini. The car is in the 3rd page and the post was last updated on march 5th. It looks like a rally car with Castrol stickers all over. If the problem seems to be the bearings what would be the correct part # for the car?
