MPi or SPi engine? Maybe one of the hoses or something else is being pushed into something else when the bonnet is closed.

Are the bonnet rubber buffers in place?

Sounds like something is just tickling something else. If it is external to the engine(which it sounds like) then it is fan related I am guessing.

It seems to lessen as the car warms up... also, If I pop the hood and manually rev from throttle body... there is no sound. Fuel injection, no breather.

Not pinging either... although I did have a car with that problem at one time :(

Here is a link to my recording. Sadly its just a photo of my car and the rest is sound. The clunk you hear at the end is the plastic steering column cover that is loose.

Like this?

Could also be reproduced by turning the steering wheel left & right when stopped (rubber mounted subframe).  It was the tear drop subframe mount.  Sprayed a little lube from the front which took care of it.

A snapped bracket of some description often makes what could be described as a chirping noise if the two fractured parts are making contact. Examples - snapped radiator top bracket, snapped engine stabiliser mount etc...

Chirping = pinging?

Its not the belt... but I appreciate the suggestion.

I have taken an audio recording and I am trying to convert it so I can post here for you guys to listen too.

so it is rpm dependent?

do the easy stuff first.

spray something on the fan belt.

Many years ago, we even held a bar of soap and let the fan belt chew on that for a second. Chirps often stopped. Still have my fingers.
