Yes that is where you would connect the pressure gauge Richard. Looking at the manual the oil flow runs into the filter from the oil pump then through the valve body and clutches and after that into a low pressure valve which looks accesible from the outside of the transmission under the bellhousing (not 100% sure but that may be your problem). Have you driven it at all yet, does it shift ok or did this problem just start ?

I may be way off base here:

all the canisters I have seen on cars  (not minis) have an O-ring . Is this what is blowing out?

or do you mean a gasket for the housing that holds the canister?

if it were a regular spin on filter, I'd say to double check that you did not have two gaskets in place (old gasket stuck to one surface, and the new one on top of it)

From my Leyland shop manual:

Start the engine & run until oil is 80C (176F) with thermometer in dipstick hole.
Restart and run at 1000rpm-
a. All gears except R the pressure should be 75-85psi
b. In reverse, pressure should be 115-125psi. (but yes it can get a bit higher).

Sorry no help with the site. Have you checked the pressure with a gauge as guru posted ?

The ADO16 website does not confirm me to join. If anyone is on there and can get them to confirm me, I'd appreciate it.

I got an email reply from Tim at J Pat that he has not seen that problem before, suggesting I check the filter. I pulled the filter out of the canister and checked the valves, but the problem continues.

I'll double check the other procedures tomorrow.

as it says if you dont get the right pressures check diagnosis FA1 which is to reset the selector cable and check the internal adjuster rod is moving the right distance in the control block - possibly you are not moving the valves all of the way in the selector block and the oil is going where it is not supposed to!

Engine oil pressure is regulated to ~75psi by the relief valve in the engine, it is way less than what's in the transmission. To check transmission oil pressure, use the hex plug connection on or near the filter head. Can be 125-150psi.

Canister filter.

i'm also surprised that excess pressure wouldn't just be by-passed in the filter head (unless it was too much flow for the little valve).

I will look up your reference - thanks.

Can't find any trouble shooting that covers what could be causing this.

Do you have the stock cannister filter or a spin on adapted one. When the auto's are put in reverse they run a lot of pressue 100lbs or more i have heard that is why they run a cannister filter and not a spin on one but some Japanese auto's have been converted to spin on filters. Whatever filter you have you are obviously making too much pressure internally, J Pat in the UK or Todd Miller on the ADO16 website may be the best people to get in touch with J Pat are suppliers and re builders of Mini automatics.
