The difference here is that the fuel injection ECU is prgrammable (with a laptop) and therefore should be able to comply with emission standards with a bit of experimenting.

See description and a few photos here: //www3.telus.net/alansweb/Moke2xs/

I think what people are trying to explain is that it must meet the manufacturer's smog specs/compliance for California, for the year of its manufacture. Since they weren't for sale in California in 1980, the manufacturer did not generate the spec, so it can't comply with something that does not exist.

Since it wasn't manufactured with that engine or fuel injection, these are two more factors of non-compliance.

You will not be able to get a 1980 Moke to pass California smog test, nor register it - never had the now required certification/compliance notice and cannot get one. The latest discussions seem to indicate even 1968 to 1975 Minis would be difficult to get registered in California. Thus the recommendations to find one already registered in California instead of importing and even then recommended to stick with true 1967 and earlier Minis for California.

Search on this site for "California Registration" to get lots of the various discussions about the trials and headaches of California's restrictions.

It is a 1980 Australian Mini Moke (1380cc with fuel injection) My current information suggests that 1975 or newer vehicles need the smog test.

Any mini in Cal. would be pre smog so would'nt apply here? The Smog test figyres are different from year to year so there is no easy answer for that anyway! what year is the car?

Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

I am searching for information on what is involved in the California Smog Test. E.g. do they insist on a catalytic convertor, engine breathers etc.
Also the numbers involved in the test.
Has anyone been failed on this test and why?
(I am thinking of putting my car up for auction in CA but it needs to pass a smog test there; no smog tests apply where I am located so I need an idea whther a Mini might run into any problems.)
