You are right, this is bizarre. Looks like someone messed up the drain plug, and then devised a bracket to push against the plug to keep it tight. I have no idea what's going to happen when I have to change the oil. I don't even want to take the chance. Something I totally overlooked when I bought the car. Is there another way to drain the oil?

That looks like something is wrong with the sump plug - there should be a gert big coarse threaded plug there, with a copper sealing washer and a magnetic trap on the back.
