The answer to the question: "How about an axial engine?" is this, the Ecoboost 1L engine exists and is real. The Duke Axial is still, apparently, just a concept. Maybe after an automaker actually mass produces a car with it in…

This is the one I was talking about.  Note that both the formula ford at the ring and this one were both projects undertaken by the Ford facotry.  The electronics are still too complicated to not have factory involvement wihen it comes to swapping these engines. If there is a market someone will crack it or Ford will sell it as a crate engine.

The direct injection aspect is troubling enough but then this engine also has a trick cooling system and who knows what else.  I occaisionally search Copart for 1.0L Fiestas and thankfully I've not found one that is anywhere close to me yet. Otherwise I would be tempted to pick it up and see it I could manage to get the engine to run without the entire car around it.

It would be an "interesting full circle" kind of thing if someone would drop an A-series in a BINI. [rolleyes]

You didn't specify a height, 1000 feet too low ?

I don't think there is a crate engine option for the 1.0L.

I thought this was brought up when they announced the crate engine option and someone measured it out to be far too tall, citing that it would need to be installed at an angle to clear and then the entire transmission issue made it WAY too big without going with some sort of tube subframe design and thus driving costs through the roof. I'll try to find that conversation. It may not have been on this forum.

I know a guy who works for Ford and designs engine control system. i discussed this potential swap with him a few months ago and his response was essentially good luck. Ford installed an ecoboost engine in some sort of off road buggy and they had a difficult time getting it to work. I think it would be fun to try though.

I suspect it would be way too big to fit.

Also discussed in this thread :-

My feeling is that its too high for a round nose engine bay.

Car engines make CO2 and trees absorb CO2. By running your engine you're feeding a tree and helping the environment.

Sounds great, but getting that engine to function without the fiesta / focus around it would be a whole lot of effort.

Ford does have a crate 2.0 ecoboost, and a matching harness kit.

You are into almost $10K for this however...

It's been fun, but this place is done. I have no hatred, and appreciate the good times. But this place now belongs to Tony and his pink mini.

Awesome  - anything is possible with time money and effort!

For sure todays engines are spectacular wiht the modern improvements.   Direct injection + Turbo / Supercharging. ALL WONDERFUL from a 4 banger!

Dont forget the Fuel system + computer and electronics systems + matching exhaust that will be required to make the boost preform the same!

Last September I bought my wife a 2015 Ford Fiesta with the 1 liter 3 cylinder turbo engine and 5 speed manual trans.  Nicest little car I've ever driven.  I like my B16A swap.  Not as scary as I feared, but really fast.  I was wondering if anyone had taken a close look at the Ecoboost to Mini swap.  I've gotten a personal best of 59.4 mpg with it.  Wife usually gets 40 around town, and she only got 44 mpg on the last trip (she had to use the A/C)  The engine is light, compact, and has 123 bhp and 148 ft/lb of torque.  It is also geared really, really tall.  I was just thinking of all the neat places you coud put this engine once it hits the salvage yards.  Mini, Europa, etc.
