The original engine is a big deal with customs when bringing a car in from the UK as the engine number is stated on the V5C (title), if your Belgium/Danish paperwork does not state the engine number you should be fine as long as it is translated. You are better off removing anything aftermarket especially bling items and shipping them seperately imo.

That sounds good Bill, I don't know when it'll happen, but it's starting to look a bit bleak in the local job market.
I'll definately give you a call should things here turn absolutely sour over here - heck, I could use a Stella or a Red Stripe, I'll bring a couple with me when we get to that point.

I'm starting to get really nervous (sad) about the day when I try to move back to the States and take my (Belgian-built) mini with me. I've owned it since 1998 and it's been the plan since I bought it that it'd be my car when I either retired or died. Of course, the car has 'evolved' since I originally bought it, but I've got all the receipts and pictures - if it matters.
If it were simply a matter of finding another 850 engine (I gave the original 850 away with the gearbox, it's since been scrapped/melted down/recycled) and re-installing twin-leading shoe brakes, I might be able to live with shipping my 998 engine and disk brakes with my household items and tools. But, if the Quadoptic headlights, roll cage or whatever else has been installed during the past 17 years, well, I might well be a man without a country. I've put everything I've got into making it 'mine' - to not be able to take it 'home' would probably be my end.

RoRo out of S.A. is doable to the east coast, but not the west coast. The other Mk3 shipped recently out of S.A. went to Brooklyn, NY, and he used the RoRo method. Look for SAMK3 on this site.

I used Rick Garrison at All Cargo Express in Richmond, B.C. He will be asked to help get a Mini from the Ukraine soon. Worth a call or email. All Cargo has connections. He got paid out of the shipping cost.

I've imported my last Mini. Over the years I've brought in maybe 20, but never again. It has become way too complicated and expensive...and I can't do all of it myself anymore. Much too complicated and way too expensive when help has to be hired.
The last car was a South African Mk3. I paid a very resonable price for it, but by the time I got it out of South African, shipped to the U.S., and cleared through all the necessary paperwork on this end, the shipping process was twice what I paid for the car. The car's a keeper and matches up well with my Wolseley 1000 so, in the long run, the price isn't horrendously bad, but if I had purchased the car with the idea of selling it for a profit, I would have taken a lose instead.

Cost to ship the 1973 Aussie Mini Window Van from Brisbane via Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Coral Sea, Inland Sea of Japan, move to another ship in Yokohama for trans-Pacific crossing, soil inspection, dock fee $2,400, then taxes and safety certification in B.C. total came to $4,600.
Yes, it needed LHD headlights (dip to right vs. RHD dip to the left...a $25 fix plus I have a good set of LUCAS headlamps on the shelf). B.C. inspector also required side maker lights...so put LEDs in the City Flairs.
Worked for me because I had prepared and used the Mini for extensive travel in Australia in 2011 and 2013 - could have rented a vehicle paid a big bill and handed back the vehicle & keys. Thus $4.600 not a bad price to pay for a Mini with good steel though not a show winner...after looping OZ during the 50th anniversary year for Mini in Australia.

What? Are you stoned or stupic? **

I think Norm knows... he's connecting "Bill" mentioned in Ian's post with Bill cox, who posted as "thewerewolf", which is apparently the name of one of Bill's pet skunks, all for the benefit of jsray84 ,who is, apparently, new here, having joined July7, 2015.
And nobody welcomed him.
So, Welome, jsray84!
(It's getting so we would benefit from a programme here that lists the cast of characters in this play. Also a glossary of terms such as "stupic" and the cultural importance of Red Stripe)

jsray84, I wouldn't purchase a Mini in NZ with the thought that I would import it and make a boatload of money. It most likely won't happen. Yes, the Minis might be cheap there, but shipping it to the US is not cheap, especially from there. CBP have tightened up on imports lately, and are creating all sorts of hoops that you have to jump thru just to get the car here. Every glitch will cost you money. From brokers fees to demurage charges, to bonded warehouses, etc, get ready to shell out some bucks or to abandon the car at the port. At any rate, you will not find the effort worth the return. If you want a Mini, buy it and enjoy it. Never buy one thinking you will drive it for a while and then sell and make a profit. Most don't go that way. Good luck with whatever you decide.

While Big Al (oldminimover49) and 1963SV2 are poking at Bill, currently posting under "thewerewolf" the pertinent part of Big Al's post is "yes, but knows his stuff" about importing cars to the US and the vagaries of trying to register Minis (and other brands) in states that have "issues" they impose on prospective owners. Bill is blunt, sometimes abrasive but almost always right about this stuff.

js, just remember that there are no official records of OEM fitouts for Aus/NZ built minis....
So, as long as your NZ rego papers show the current numbers for your particular car ... and you don't buy something off the wall (VTEC engines etc) there's no one who can tell what might have been the original configuration.
And while Bill has been polishing his reputation recently .......... he is a dealer... with a reputation.
Cheers, Ian
