Agreed. The part screwed directly into the cylinder head appears to be an adapter... or an old sending unit drilled out and tapped to function as an adapter.
GTR101 appears to be a typical sending unit with a single spade terminal.
Is the gauge you are working with a Smiths temperature gauge? If not, don't try using GTR101 with it. Sending units from one brand of gauge cannot be used with another brand of gauge.

Hello, i recently bought a temperature sending unit (Prduct number GTR101) but it does not fit into my engine block.
My engine may be from a 1980's metro, so i was wondering where i may find one that is smaller. The one i have is too big to fit in the hole
The one in this picture is the one i need to replace if that helps at all.
On another note the one i have (GTR101) has two wires, one for ground one for the gauge. I only need one wire becuase it grounds itself to the engine block.
It looks like the one in the picture maybe has an adapter/reducer fitting on it. On closer inspection it does not look like the normal ones i have run across.
If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.
