Wow, I'm sorry guys I'm stupid. I was trying to put GAE191 into the hole.... haha thanks for the help though, i appreciate it.

I had both parts and got them mixed up.

Agreed.  The part screwed directly into the cylinder head appears to be an adapter... or an old sending unit drilled out and tapped to function as an adapter.  

GTR101 appears to be a typical sending unit with a single spade terminal.  

Is the gauge you are working with a Smiths temperature gauge?  If not, don't try using GTR101 with it.  Sending units from one brand of gauge cannot be used with another brand of gauge.

It looks like the one in the picture maybe has an adapter/reducer fitting on it. On closer inspection it does not look like the normal ones i have run across.
