A 998 set up right and with the right modifications will produce as much power as a 1275 and be smoother and less prone to head gasket failure imo. The biggest "negative" if you want to call it that is the usual lack of a decent FD ratio for a more relaxed highway cruising which is easy to sort out. I bought a low mileage A+ 998 bog standard Mini City from the UK with a factory fitted 2.9 FD and even with that FD it ran like $hit off a shovel. It is all in the set up Boison.

Yes, 850's and 998's can run well at that speed, if tuned properly. (Mine did.) They also have to be in reasonable condition. Any small engine-car will need to be down-shifted going up steep hills unless you have enough momentum built up.

There is no difference between a "1275" and a "1300". They are (unless a very unusual build) the same engine. 1275 engines are often referred to as 1.3 litre (rounding up), and then, because some people can't be bothered to write out the word "litre", and write it casually as 1300. But the displacement is still 1275cc. Larger capacity engines are usually bored out to suit the next standard oversize pistons, so produce specific displacements over 1300cc. The other way is to restroke the crank, which is costly.

For better performance for your engine, you can learn how to set points and timing properly, use a matched set of plug wires, tune the carb, and set valve clearances properly. Beyond that, you may need to replace worn parts, like possibly the distributor, possibly the carb, have a valve job done on the cylinder head.... The more you want to do, the more it will cost, but you know that. But you could get considerably more performance out of your engine by buying quality parts, which would likely be cheaper than installing a 1275. That's because any 1275cc you (or I) can afford would be used and not rebuilt. That means it will come with its own set of problems that will need parts and labour to sort out... like a new dizzy, a new carb, a valve job.... better brakes.... and it wouldn't be any more reliable than your current engine until you did.

I speak from personal experience - my current Mini came with a 1275 Metro engine, but it had a worn dizzy from a 998 (wrong advance for the engine), a worn carb from a 998 on a cast iron manifold from a 998 (just like yours!), a lousy exhaust system that probably caused me brain damage from the CO just driving it home, a leaky rad (and heater). Like you, my budget is limited, so I can only gradually improve my Mini over many years. I even considered swapping the engine for a nice, dependable 998 that would be cheaper to run.

yes as ive said , i am just sad i didnt get the 1275.   i just need it, im so sick and so tired of my 998, yes it does run perfect but i dont get the power i wanted.  thats why i am very surprised that someone here said his 850 runs at 70mph a well as his 998 back in the days, im like really???? it cant even climb a steep hill , seesh! but annyway i guess i need to be contented of what i have for now. ... but still,, in search of cheap 1275 or better yet 1300,  i know 25cc makes a lot of difference

As malsal said.

Where is your emal on this board? Nobody, but nobody, is going to go through all your past treads or postings to try to find your email address.

Your profile shows "[email protected]" which is a false email address - it gives this response:
You would have to open an account at that site AND provide a real email address.

Stop whining !!!!

Dan never said that he said it was your job to locate the sellers email address not vice versa.

Get used to missing out on deals, the way you present yourself no one will be bothered dealing with you.

Why do you need a 1275, your engine is supposedly running perfectly ?

Re-read my post. It is your job to locate his email address, like everyone else.

Yes, since he owns the item, he has absolute right to sell it to anyone he chooses at any price he chooses, or to not sell it. This is not a public auction.

And guess who else has no email or any contact information for that matter in their profile. Let's face it you have been very successful at alienating most posters on this board Boison.

How did you come to the conclusion that you were first to contact him, just because you were the first to post a reply is not proof he may have had it for sale locally or someone else already had his email address.

Boison: The standard method of sales such as this it for the purchaser to email the seller. The seller does not send out emails to the prospective buyers. The "fair" way is for the seller to give first consideration to the first email he receives. The seller also has the absolute right to not deal with anyone he doesn't trust or has a reputation of not dealing in a forthright manner.

You could have gotten mystacreation's contact info through Miniowners.com by following the link in his profile here. I can only presume that is what others would have done if they wanted the engine badly enough. When mystacreation reported the engine sold, the sale may not even have transpired through this noticeboard - he might have sold it to the guy next door to him. Who it was sold to is strictly the business of the buyer and seller, not yours.
