Of course it is! (Thanks!) You aren't trying to pun-ish me, are you? No jibes.

if none, then what if the wind blows west all day, does it mean you have to wait till the wind blow to the east before you can go back ?? maybe in two days? im just dumb curious. we dont have this in malaysia.

These questions are not dumb, but quite reasonable.

It is not necessary to have a motor on a sailboat. People were sailing thousands of years before motors. A modern pleasure sailboat may have a motor - it is ususally dependent on its size. In the attached picture (the view from my sailing club), all the boats, except for the one in the red circle do not have motors. These small boats are called Lasers - a standardized design for racing that carries one person. The bigger boat circled in red is a cruising sailboat, which has a cabin that probably sleeps 4 to 6 people. It would have a motor to make it easier to handle in confined areas, like a marina or approaching a dock.

My boat is like the one in the second picture. It is called a Bombardier 4.8, and yes it was made by the same company that made Ski-Doos and now makes aircraft and passenger railway equipment. It will carry 4 people in comfort and is referred to as a "day-sailer", meaning you can spend all day on it, but it isn't intended for sleeping in. It is 4.8m long (16feet) and has a mast about 22 feet tall and two sails. We bought ours in 1980, meaning it is older than my Mini.

As described in the web pages suggested by Flyinace, a sail, when filled with wind, forms a curved shape like an airplane wing. It also functions like an airplane wing, where the air passing voere the convex side flows faster than the air on the concave side. The first trick in sailing is to angle the sail to get the maximum effect from the wind available, from a light beeze to a heavy wind. That is simple with the small boats in the first picture that have only one sail. In the same way an airplane wing gets lift from the air moving over it, so does a sail. But since the sail is more or less vertical, the "lift" become a force to move the boat, which can be much greater than just wind filling a sail. So, the boat moves, sometimes very quickly.

Now for direction of travel: because the "lift" on a sail isn't in the direction of the wind on it, but can be almost perpendicular to the sail, this applies a force used to move the boat. By adjusting the angle of the sail in relation to the boat, the boat can be angled to within 45 degrees of where the wind is coming from. That's how we sail "up-wind". By zig-zagging back and forth we can arrive at a point directly up-wind.

What a tack-ful response!

We attended church in the morning and went sailing in the afternoon. Perfect weather: sunny/part cloud, temperature around 25 deg. C , nice steady wind from the south-east.

Aaaanyway, today i primer-ed the inside of the left and right quarter panels of my mini, no rain here, so it should be good, no need for undercoating, looks cleaner with primer. , plus black undercoating is very common..

Looks like there's winners and loosers on this site.  Evidently Boison wins, I loose.  Thanks to all for a great many years of sharing, caring, and great interactive technical suppoort.  I really appreciate you all.  My profile is still fully filled out if you need anything, or if I can help.  Adios,  Jimini

Nope...unloaded a freezer in the Laundry Room, defrosted it, took the top off to get through a narrow/old style doorway, rolled it out to the rear deck on rollers like the Egyptian pyramid builders rolled blocks of stone, reassembled it, plugged it in and reloaded it.

Need to do reverse after new sub-floors and flooring is down.

Was OK to do since I was out watching the Historic Races at River's Edge Road Course yesterday.  Was great fun watching a Classic Mini run with the big V8s.  Mini started 4th, finished 4th and gave the Camaro & Mustang V8s a fit.  In the photo the Mini has taken 3rd place from the Mustang...and ran with them down the main straight (oh for another few HP).
