The 59D was an A+ dizzy. Much like a 45D in design, but with the A+ dog and clamping. Don't see them much here in Oz, except on private imports.
Mini Mania says it's the last one that used points.

so when did the 59d4 came out? seems to me that the 59d is the low tech of them all, the drive dog is thicker than the 25d and 45d. i searched the flamethrower distributor, they have available for 25d and 45d but NOT the 59D. if i want to switch from 59D to 45D, what needs to be modified in my engine? is there any?

Kevin, any idea when the 45D was first introduced ?
Australia first got the 45D (also 43D, no vac) around 1975, when we stopped making 1098s (with Oz made 29Ds on) and started importing UK built 998s instead.
I'd suggest the UK had them before this. I checked Parnell's Cooper & S book, it makes no mention of Mk3 S having it. So probably after 1971.

What is the distributor on a 1098cc engine? I want to convert it to an electronic ignition (no point) distributor. is this possible?
To answer your question it could have either a 25D or a 45D distributor. If original it will more than likely have the 25D usually with red points in it and a nut that holds the wires in place. Post a picture of your distributor and we can tell you for sure as it could have been changed in the last 45 years.

depend mainly on which drive dog you have on your current distributor.
Nope-
If it's a 1098, they were all A series. No 1098 A+.
As for the original dizzy, not all 1098s were 25D- it could also be a 45D if it's from a UK late 80s Mini. But if it is Australian built (unlikely) it would be a 29D.

Everybody:
You missed the first part of Allives question: "What is the distributor on a 1098cc engine?"
Is Allives asking what a distributor is or what model distributor is on their engine?
If Allives does not know what a distributor is or looks like on their engine, is it a good idea to tell about installing an electronic ingition by him/her self?
Willie has the best idea. The Mini Mania people have the knowledge and products to help Allives.

You could also fit the Pertronix or a Powerspark module, then lock the distributor's mechanical advance, and fit an Accuspark Stealth black box. This allows you to program whatever advance curve you like, to suit the characteristics of your engine.
I have run this for 12 months now, it's great.

The same model distrinutor will have many different advance specs depending on the application. Assuming you have the distributor the model might be stamped on the side but defimitely there ill be a model number. You might have to remove the distributor or use a mirror to read the model number. From the model number you can find what model it is from Marcel Chichak's distributor data base. //www.starchak.ca/tech/pdfs/lucas.pdf
The Pertronics Ignitor makes use of the mechanical automatic advance in the distributor. If the distributor has been changed or the motor modified the advance might not be right for your motor. Another option is the 123 Distributor which is completely electronic including the advance. It has 16 selectable advance curves so you can pick one that is ideal for your motor. The 123 is a complete replacement unit and is about 4x the cost of the Igniitor.

Definitely possible. If its for the 1970 the distributor is probably a 25D4. Not sure if 45D4 came on that year. Pertronix makes a great kit and I have used them for years without fail. Your best bet is to do your research and find the part number of the kit you need because you can usually get it cheaper from the manufacturer or amazon. Its nice not having to set point gap and dwell I can assure you. But I always keep a set of spare points in the car just in case. I hope this helps.
