I posted a small writeup this morning just before heading out on the road, my eyes still damp.

Tonight I had more time to look and by gosh I have a picture from MME 03 where Robin and I were teamates in "MURPH" the '59 Mini with no real interior (as Big Al said) and the wicked 1380 powerplant.  I wish I could remember where he said that car originated from but I want to say Gibraltar.

I remember being amazed that he even let a complete stranger (almost) drive as we had previously only typed at one another here on MM.  Yup, we pulled over and he let me drive it a few miles.  Wow, was I frightened that this really nice guy was allowing ME to drive his prized posesion.  After a couple miles, I pulled over and let him have the wheel again,(my decision, not his) but I am not exaggerating to say my heartrate was greatly increased during that part of the drive.

I wish we had more time Robin.

(insert rolleyes here)

My small tribute today will be to take my Mini for an evening cruise up on the Blue Ridge Parkway where I can watch the sun set on my corner of the planet and remember Zip and all our shared good times. Here are a few pictures of Zip and Scargo and their renditions of "Boys Being Boys" @ the 2006 SCCA Runoffs in Topeka, where there seemed to be far too many rules for so few attendees....

Very sad indeed.Much to young to be leaving us. He will be greatly missed by this community. He always took time to say hello when we saw each other at Mid Ohio.

Too soon, Sir Zip..too soon... RipwoC= Rest in Peace with our Creator.

In Respect to Zippypinhead, i strongly encourage everyone, including the newbies not to post new topics at least within 24hrs, let's spend this 24hrs reminiscing and sharing our memries with our dear Moker,Sir Robin.

Let's all put down our wrenches, screw drivers, let's stop doing our carbs and distributor, let's stop doing what we are doing in our garages now for a while and let's say a Prayer for Sir Robin.

Mathew 18:20 -  For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am i in the midst of them.

How sad, indeed,  he will be greatly missed.  My condolences to all the family members.

I am now going to the garage to place my hula girl on my moke, hoping he would appreciate it.

We had our monthly mini meeting for COMO members last evening. Came home and read the news from Matt. I posted on the COMO Facebook page and asked Paul Strieby to post on the Ohio Mini Owners page also. I heald off posting a reply till now. We all knew what a quality person he was. I was reflecting on his life and love for not only the quirky little cars but their owners. My mind turned to Todd Dunning who also lost his father recently. I took stock in the short 19 years I had the pleasure of mine own fathers company. I wasn't able to talk with zippy long at MidOhio because of a recent foot surgery. He scolded me for being on my feet, but understood the therapy of the race track. Got an email last week from zip, didn't elude to the severity of his health. I feel fortunate to have known him, my life richer. Although he lived in North Royalton (44133) his mustache I've joked had it's own "zip code ". Best to you and your family Matt, from zips extended family.

Jonathan, Central Ohio Mini Owners. COMO

I didn't know Zippy but had an exchange or 2 with him on this board. He was obviously a man to know  ... from the out pourings herein. My condolences to family and friends.

A very sad day indeed. I met Robin at Mid-Ohio a few times and was able to ride around the course with him in hi Moke. He even joked about the zipper on his chest from the surgery.

Thanks for ride, Robin. I'll remember you every year at the vintage races at Mid-Ohio.

I'm not a gynecologist,

But I'll take a look.

I was privileged to meet Robin when he stopped by Mini Mania a couple of years back, right out of the blue when he was in Northern California. He just came in and asked for me!  We spent maybe 20 minutes talking, I don't think I had a Mini or Moke that day, but I offered to run home and get one!  I don't know if I've ever met a more genuine and cheerful man.  My deepest condolences to his family, including dozens of members on this forum who have known him for many years.

Despite some griping on here, this forum is almost an extended family for many of us.  in that sense, Robin was probably related to more of us than any other member. Many, many families are feeling this loss, and the Mini world has lost one of it's most eloquent ambassadors.

Hi Matt.. I don't think I have met you but I have met your dad at local car shows and cruises in NE Ohio over the years.  I first met him after noticing his Moke at a show and striking up a conversation with him.  He was always very kind to me and willing to share his knowledge of Mokes and Minis in general.  As time went by we became farily good friends I hope I can say and talked through email and on the phone in addition to being at shows.  His enthusiam for Mokes was a big factor in trying to learn about the various types of Mokes and actually picking up a Moke.  I talked to him via email I think as recent as last Friday or Saturday and asked him if he was home... replied he might be "sprung out" Sunday, I think he said.

I brought my Moke over to your home, met your mom, and your dad helped me sort out some issues on the Moke.. He even took a picture of the two Mokes next to each other.. He also helped me with a Mini also about 5 weeks ago.. He took it for a test ride.. looked under the bonnet and within seconds had a idea.. thought the engine was running too lean.. went into the garage... looked through some of his tools for something.. could not find it but had another idea.. put in four spark plugs that he had.. swapped them out.. and volia.. runs like a champ... some coil connector should be made tighter too but for then, it was fixed in a second.

I last saw your dad about week or so ago at the Shaker British car show.. It was always nice to see him.. He was always very friendly and approachable to anyone.  His knowlege of Mokes, their history, their foibles, their quirks, and their charm I have found second to none.

Robin, as a person is much more than the world of Mokes and Minis though.. That was primarily my interactions with him but we did talk a little and I could sense a real strong man with courage, dignity, and humbleness.  Please accept my condolences for your and your family's loss.

Jim

Clearly Robin touched a lot of people in the Mini community, and beyond I'm sure.

I will roll my eyes at everyone I meet today (even my boss!) in his honour!!

My prayers go out to you and yours.  I've only had an online mtg with him, but he certainly had a presence!  Having a recently acquired understanding of what he faced, I also understand a little tiny bit now.

Moke on, Robin!

Best,

MSH

Robin was right there when I got home from heart surgery...his email note from September 2nd, 2009:

"So, you wound up with an artificial valve? Does the clicking bother you? I suppose it's kind of reassuring to hear it. From one of your posts, you seem to hurt the same way I did when you get a good laugh... But it's a good kind of hurt huh?

I was a candidate for the Ross procedure because I was young and in otherwise excellent health. I don't know current protocol but 15 years ago less than 100 people a year had it done. My thoughts are that, if I was born twenty years earlier, I would already be dead. So, every day is treated as a gift. And, although I don't have any way of ever knowing the donor family, I thank them every day. Takes a special kind of people to give a gift in their time of grief.

As I recovered from the surgery, my strength took a while to come back. I can remember being really aggravated with my wife for walking faster than I could keep up with. Now, I have to remember those days as I wait for her to catch up to me...

Anyhow, keep up the hard work of rehab. No backsliding now.

And, I don't know if you caught my post, but I really think we should have some sort of badge for Mini owners that have had a major surgery. A zipper would be appropriate.

Robin"

A true friend from across the miles and years...and, an interesting idea BIG AL for a 'Zipper Badge'.  Maybe like a tire tread??

The balmy 2012 SCCA Runoffs @ Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.  Zip and the Fudd hat, and my picture of our crew waiting for the next pot of hot coffee at the concession stand above Turn 7. The memories in this picture are so, so many, and now, sadly, the bookends in this group shot are only with us in those memories. NJ on the left, and Zip on the right, are both gone less than three quick years later. Rolleyes, indeed.
