Based on my experience with a 04, any ol' battery works.

Just curious, is it the same situation for a Gen One Mini battery replacement? (specifically 2004) Thanks!           Mini Estate

P.S. My original battery was still good after 8 years (new with the car from the Factory). I replaced it before it ever went bad. I had it replaced with the same exact battery at the Dealership. I never asked if it had to be programmed in???

Here is what the factory says about the battery on the 2013 Cooper S:

The original battery (battery size and type) as indicated in the vehicle's order specifications must always be installed to ensure correct operation of the on-board electrical system!

If the vehicle is equipped with an IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor), the battery must be registered via the diagnostic system (ISTA); this process also registers the battery with the vehicle's on-board electrical system.

Standard batteries can always be replaced by AGM batteries with the same specifications. Following either type of replacement, the vehicle registration process in ISTA/P must be supplemented by a vehicle coding procedure, which is carried out as follows:  Read out battery size and registration from onboard electrical system: ISTA->Service functions->Body->Voltage supply->Register_battery replacement-> Test plan

Here are the three battery spec's that is specified for you 2013 Cooper S - which one depends on the options on your car:

55AH
70AH 570A
AGM 60 AH 680A

The bottom line, if your MINI has the IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor), you may need to follow MINIs advice...

BMW has introduced power managment since the E65 in 2002. So maybe they apply same rules on Binis. This requires the battery change to be specified by the diagnostic software and synced to the car.. Ask another dealer for clarity..
