Thanks Doug for the offer. I'll let you know if I decide to remove the lip. I am still trying to decide whether it is worth it or not. I need to paint the hood first.

Cheers,

Abel

It's a very popular retro fit with Japanese market MINIs.  I've never used a spot weld drill bit...but I'd take him up on that offer.

Abel, don't use normal drill bits to drill the spot welds.  Call me and come by the house some evening.  You can borrow one of my spot weld cutters.

Does the upper metal lip on the hood need to be removed? Has anybody done this kind of retrofitting before? I would love to see pictures before I go to far or mess something up?

Cheers

....and while I am in the process of repainting the hood, I thought I would like to add a MKI grille and moustache. Does anybody have one in decent shape that I could use? Depending on condition, I could offer as trade my brand new wavy grille seen on my car. Just let me know if anybody is interested,

cheers,

Abel

I would probably fit the moustache as well if I went with a grille instead of the original panel.
If I use an original panel, I would want to make it removable.  I've yet to find pictures of how this is done

oops, I have not noticed that the grilles are different sizes. Thanks for bringing that to my attention Spitz. Well, I guess that will make more difficult to achieve the look I was aiming for

The thing is, the grill is a different shape....not just the height thing, the sides are a different profile.

Your car looks good as is IMO...the over-riders add that classic touch

I'll soon be needing to decide also what look to go with on my van.  I think I'm leaning towards the MkI Morris grille instead of the original van panel

thanks. I am open to offers and see if anybody has a surround (moustache) that I could salvage.

I think I was confused when I thought that the wavy grille was for MKI cars when in realilty it is for MKII, right?,

cheers,

Abel

Oh, dear. All that looks like too much trouble for such a thing. I appreciate your input on this. I might aswell keep it the way it is right now.

I just thought of adding the moustache since I need to repaint the hood and might need to remove the upper lip anyway,

thanks for all the information,

Abel

Fitting the MK1 moustache will also uncover several of the screw holes in the front panel for the current grill which will need filling and painting.

To Add a Mk 1 Grille photo -  Mk 1 Does not have the complete size metal frame / Outer Surround like MkII Later grilles

The upper Mustashe covers the Upper nose panel just under the bonnet closing latch

basically - the whole grille is _ shorter in height. and the mustashe covers that height difference

Both pictured...

Has anybody dones this?

Yes it is a different shape.

The upper lip bracket is spot welded on if it is original so you can either drill those welds out or cut and grind it off if you don't want holes in the bonnet lip.
