Yes vubeat,  we checked that while fitting the wood before it went out to body/paint shop.  Rear corner uprights were modified to suit.

don't forget to check if the bumper halves will clear the wood. I had trouble with the outside(corner) holes.

Spent a few useful hours yesterday fitting Barn Doors with rebuilt hinges, new gaskets & hardware got good gaps with only a little wood to remove on left hand pillar and right lower door rail tip (SEE yellow tape for areas of modest wood removal).

Nick the body man will address only the inside shape of wood as he does not want there to be any pressure points on paint when finished wood is attached following body/paint.  For example, right now there is some indicated potential rocking at the hip line at the B pillars.

Work is not being done continuously as the shop project list is shared with a '64 Canso and the rebuilding of a drag car into a blown 900 hp street machine...with each seeing arrival of bits.  LUCKY is the happiest work, since we stripped, replaced metal, blasted etc. before it got to the shop...no metal surprises.  Not so with the other vehicles.

My 'man' wants all bolt on bits in hand and test fitted before final body & paint.  I'm happy with that.

So, in addition to wood fitment, we have been test fitting door latches, handles, rebuilt the barn door hinges, fitted grill & surround etc. etc.

Separately, we have traced a complete new Newton Commercial interior panel kit as NC does not have anything that will go with the 'Lime Squeeze Metallic'.  Panels, carpet, seat rebuilds will all happen here, done by chap who did the interior in Pooh & Hunny Pot (trailer) 10 years ago.

OK...body/paint man & I went over the Mini today - he pencilled all the body items...happy he was not able to get to it while I was away at MMW.

We spent a fair bit of time on the barn doors fit.  Maybe both wood & metal adjustments.

Body/paint main will address the nuances of wood/body fit before paint.  I will bring out more detailed items like headlight buckets, headlight trim, door catches etc.  NEED Grill!  What grill?  How fast can I get one?

Nick, my body/paint man, is a perfectionist.  We'll see how this goes.

Ceramic shop next door to the power boats...2 with almost 1,150 HP this afternoon.  I may ceramic coat the Metro intake, Cooper Freeflow, dash panel & barn door latches & steadies....

Meanwhile, ROO the Aussie Van ran west on Hwy. 1 at speed to home over the Golden Ears Bridge.

Tomorrow I spend the day at the body & paint shop with Nick the 'Artist' & LUCKY.  We'll see how we get along!

OOPS...we stayed at the Super 8 (actually just outside the Auburn city limits).  Would have been good to be with friends!

For...RON in Delaware - my Wood kit [& Ron's, in Kelowna] were bought from Verdis Upton in 2010 at MMW in Penticton.  They were prototype kits, first out the door, so use of 1/4" studs versus cap screws in some of the lower locations (wheel arches in particular) was not seen as an advantage and the early kit was short 8/32 nutserts & cap screws.

Nick is pretty good. Should have said you were in Auburn, I live about 7 miles away and you could have stayed here!

Out to see body & paint man Monday.  Glad he got slowed by the Beaumont & Pontiac body/paint work.  Learned a couple of things from Nick in Auburn which I want to share.

On the way north from MMW I picked up some new bits for the Woody build today while Nick was inspecting & servicing the Aussie Window Van.

Apart from easily observed items like failed exhaust hanger, Nick detected an upper ball joint problem. On disassembly the 'ball' was pitted.

Yes, fit the wood before final body & paint...remove for body work as required, paint shell...and finish wood before installing over new paint.

It is a bit of an on/off process to ensure a close match...remember I am dealing with a 55 year old shell with many steel repairs so it needs TLC. The process is very different than installing wood on a brand new build from the factory in the 60's.

Also worked (successfully) with a prototype from Verdis Upton who used some different jointing methods and fasteners.

No there is no benefit of installing the wood before painting in fact it is detrimental. I am assuming Rick has only got the wood installed temporary before final fit and finish on the body work and then removing it to paint then re install it.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

I have been watching your progress on here. Looking pretty good! I have to ask as I am working on my own 1963 Austin Countryman with the wood trim. I have my wood trim kit in and getting ready to start prime the whole car. Is there an advantage to installing the wood kit prior to paint? I guess I have seen it done both way. What is your experience with it?

Dan,

The 'green' stuff is masking tape for the road travel and, yes, the wood will come off before paint.

3 more US quarts (0.942 litres) of Lime Squeeze Metallic (@ $112/qt.) should get the job done. We used 1 quart on the bottom, wheel wells to bottom of crossmember.

Body man only uses epoxy filler after dolly work etc. We may try something a little different on the floors and inside rear panels.... He has also been given permission to cut steel if necessary, use thin nylon washers in the exterior door hinges and will rebuild the barn door hinges with new pins, balls etc. I have given him the detail on the uniqueness of the 8 hinges.

Glad he is excited to have a very different project. He is a perfectionist who sees each worthy project as a new 'canvas'. He is not a production body/paint man.

We will stay in touch as I wander south to MMW and home again. Already excited to see the results!

Have come a long way since December 1st last!

Rick

Rick: Does the wood come off before final paint? What's the green stuff at the wood?
