I was not supposed to reply, but you said " a question for the experts" .. So now iam compelled to reply.

that is a lot of slack you got there,  the teeth on the drive shaft both on the wheel side or the transmission side might be worn out. Or the 8 1/2 inch ball bearings on the transmission side might be loose, if one of these two drive shaft got worn out, the one side will siphon the power and car will not move... Better replace them, you dont want to $tall in the middle of a heavy traffic..

Quickly the running on was mainly high idle.

Now another question for the experts.  I have this clunck in the drive when shifting or if I add power and then take my foot off the throttle.  There appears to be a lot of slop in the drive train.  I jacked up the front.  While in gear I can put my finger on the tire tread and move both front tires about 1 1/2" before the it makes contact with the drive. Seems like to much slack.  The clutch and transmission appear normal.  What's that all about?

Back on top!
Glad to read you are getting stuck into the little dear. Most problems end up being little things (unless they are ignored!).
You will have to get used to the parking lot comments. Sometimes you can't make a trip without someone needing a chat.

Well I'm still sitting on top of the page, I surely don't deserve that !!

Home middle of last month from my first  Snowbird adventure after retiring in November.  Been working on the Mini and learning about it.  First the steering issue was simple, to little air in the rear tires.  My fault, showed have checked them myself before I left San Francisco.  New tires from our host and all's fine.  reviously posted, I replaced the slave cylinder for the clutch, now good travel.  Had to replace the water temp gage with a new one, all's well there.  Chased wires until I found a wire pulled out of the small plug on the turn/dimmer lever on the column and now have headlights.  Wipers blew a fuse so that's ok as well.  However heater fan runs off the same line and it's not turning so further digging.  Looks like I will find top dead center on the flywheel and then try to mark the harmonic balancer to use for timing.  Jemal says 28 deg total.  I'll work on that since looking thru a mirror and reading backwards is to confusing for this old mind.

Going up this Sunday to meet the OMS/Portland group.  Looking forward to their input on my car.  As I though it would be and all you folks have passed on to me, this car is a real kick. My first stop at Albertson's as I was getting back into the car a lady across from my parking spot young boy's comment made it all worth while.  "Hey mom look at that little car!  Son that is a REAL Mini !"

I had a great visit with kolsen as well. We promised to meet-up this Spring/Summer at a Mini event on the West coast. Safe travels my friend.

Well I'm ready to get home and play with cars.  Almost 2 1/2 months with no fix.  Will be stopping in Santa Barbara in a month and visiting with Rosebud.   I talked with our host and I'll be stopping at their shop in Nevada City to pick up some tires and maybe some other tidbits.  After that it's a slow return to Oregon and Porsche track days and I think I'll start with some Mini autoxing and socializing.

Rodger that. It's on my calendar. We're expecting rain this week. With any luck there'll be water in the lake come March. CU then!

My 30+ yr. old 911 was drop-dead showroom original. 28k miles without a blemish. And I felt as if I couldn't even install an after-market shift knob lest I destroy it's originality. I once purchased a giant, crazy expensive, low-spec (by today's standards) OEM battery because well, it was OEM. After washing I'd coat the Fuchs with Vaseline because that's what the manual recommended. I know, ick! Stupid. Never again. Had to sell when my Mini restro budget got way out of hand. Someone got a nice car. Me? I've got some nice pictures. Jeez.

My Mini is indeed personalized. I get the bone-stock OEM thing. But not for me. Not this time.

I'll keep you in mind.  I'm in Lake Havasu now.  Will drift over to San Diego 1st of March and then and then work my way back to Oregon middle of March via Solvang.

If the course is tight enough it sure can. Minis used to get FTD all the time when I used to do 'em back in the 70's. Porche has too much power and you spend all yoiur time fighting it thru the sharp turns.

If it's not Scottish....it's crap! (Cry of the Mini Tartan Owners' Clan)

Hey Jolson, are you planing to pass through Santa Barbara on your journey south? if so, give me a shout out. Long-time 911 owner, current Mini owner, retired, etc. We should meet-up for lunch. Plenty for the wife to do in town while we talk cars.

Yes with ease! AutoX tracks are short tight tracks not much room to actually use that 265hp and a good mini will out turn almost any car. Plus your average Porsche owner can't drive for S*** but they look good............

high hopes...

Back in the 70's in San Diego when I started autoxing in the parking lot in Mission Valley, Mini's and a Lotus would capture Top Time.  If they opened the the course up for more speed a fellow in a 289 Cobra would take it.  My TR4 wasn't in that class.
