You guys really haven't ever seen mods before? Their scooters are always festooned with lots of lights and mirrors. Its a whole thing, since the early '60s.
The mods had crappy, entry level jobs, and dressed nicely and were struggling to get their foot onto the first rung of the workingman's ladder. They drove hand-me-down scooters (their WWII parents had all bought scooters during the '50s, when cars were impossible for the average UK citizen to get, and then they dumped the unloved scooters for nothing when, finally, the flood gates opened at the end of the '50s, and after the '57 fuel crisis). The mods had no money, could get those scooters for almost nothing, and to make them better than the crappy "this is all I can get" transportation of their parents they decorated them, some wildly. They loved the Kinks, the Who, the Zombies.
The rockers, on the other hand, drove proper motorcycles, were working class, and already earning about as much as they ever will. They liked Gene Vincent, Elvis, you get the point. Oil and water.
They hated each other.
I am really surprised that you guys don't all know this already, and are questioning the "reason" of putting so many lights on a scooter.
Watch Quadrophenia, now. It is an awesome movie about youth, and alienation. Plus, one of the Who's best albums. Plus, Leslie Ash, as Steph, is a total hottie.

Show over substance one might think....

Everybody here can start scratching your heads because my car doesn't have anything "performance", rare or special really.
Yes it does: The owner.
The mini is a 1962 997cc Austin Mini Cooper, with a 998 Cooper motor, came with twin carb and correct cleaner housing, correct 7" brakes. Solid original California car. It's pretty rare to lots of people.
Yeah my heritage certificate just arrived. Was hoping it's original tartan red and white but not really lol but it's a cool rare 997 San Francisco, California mini since 1962.

Without knowing, I would guess that the Works were taking advantage of the dual sidelight/indicator installation on the '64 S's - our 1071 Radford has the sidelights in the indicators, and just flash slightly brighter when you are indicating (dual filament bulb like in a tail/brake light).
As the indicator has been replaced by a spotlight, my guess would be that they were exploiting the definition of "sidelight" and merely repositioned the indicator to allow fitment of the bigger lamp.

Not to mention the various rules and regulations for lights when rallying which may have changed from year to year and we all know how that ended up with a Mini disqualification.

CRX89B came later (at least, it has a later reg number), so maybe they learned a lesson and mounted the lights higher as a result of it?
I can't tell from the photo of CRX89B, but I THINK those are driving lights (smooth glass), in which case they need to be mounted up as high as is possible for maximum effect. In contrast, the two on 33EJB are fog lights, which you want to down as low as possible, to work well. On most cars, that means under the bumper. Maybe the mini was so low to start with, and rallying is so rough on lights, perhaps that's why they still mounted them above the bumper, but only just?

I guess it was only done in a few rally cars including 33EJB. I wonder why they had to reposition that specific car' turn signal lights when they could easily put the two lamps on the hood like CRX89B's.

In this video, there are several works cars and most seem to not have the turn signals repositioned.

Great! I'll look it up Malcolm. Mine will be on the next month's readers section. Been emailing back and forth with Stephen Colbran of mini mag and getting great advice from Bryan Purves. Waiting for a confirmation for a future full feature. Everybody here can start scratching your heads because my car doesn't have anything "performance", rare or special really. Just few bits and pieces from local stores. Guess they see something else in it people here in the US doesnt.

Go for the sump guard before more rally lights...!
nice notice tho on that relocation of those turn signals on E33 - from my google image search -that may have been a more one off E33 than a complete BMC Rally car thing.
That area wouldnt be very fun to mod on a mini body to put those in ( Fender and front panel seams) right in that location . Cut chop mod!
Chip Foose would probably do it and you' would need 2 side by side to notice the difference!
This is all Just my Opinion! ( your doing a great job tarting up the mini to rally Specs! )
I'll leave it alone. I've done too many holes already. I have the sumpguard, new clutch kit and few other stuff just looking for a good weekend to install it. There're a few good people on facebook that immediately confirmed that BMC Works did repositioned their turn signal lights. Just want to know from the minimania demographic.
